Unbiased links

Postby Snad » Fri Jan 16, 2009 7:30 am

I have never before ventured into this part of the forum before, as the Cyprus problem is for Cypriots IMHO

Could any of you give me a link to UNBIASED opinions on how the UK was involved in your trouble?

I really do mean unbiased as I don't want to spend time reading propaganda.

Some may think this is a strange request, but I would just like to find out how my homeland was involved, as Cyprus is now my home and has been for the last four years.

TIA

The most informative Historian I have come across regarding the British, is Niall Ferguson. His recent book on the British Empire is a good starting point to understanding generally, Britain's involvement in world affairs.

They are just upstart pirates after all ....

However it's not "UNBIASED opinions" that you are probably after (they are hard to come by) ... but perhaps a request towards some facts. (Maybe do a search over some of Piratis' posts on this forum, as they are the most fact-based). IMHO :)

IMHO there is no such thing as an unbiased history since every historian brings his own bias to what he is writing (even being neutral is a bias of sorts) and those carrying out the actions about which the historian writes have motives which can only be guessed at afterwards.

Take as an example an event that is much more recent and about which I guess you read and heard first-hand reports, e.g. Gulf War 2. Was Iraq invaded because the US thought Iraq was preparing weapons of mass destruction, to make Iraq a democracy, to secure Iraqi oil, to make bigger profits for the industrial-military complex, to prevent international terrorism .................

Read all you can and come to your own opinion is my advice.

For the recent tale if the involvement if Britain, you can look at the London and Zurich agreements re: the SBA's. Plenty sources are available on the web.

Just reat the Annan plan, drafted by an English man (a Lord!) and what Cypriots were asked to accept regarding Britian's bases as part of their collective future.

Dear O

I was replying to Snad's original post asking for unbiased histories, not your recommended reading.
