Alternative Uses for the SBAs ....

Postby Oracle » Wed Jan 14, 2009 8:18 pm

I think the UK will shortly be seeking a face-saving retreat from funding the money-pits they call Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus.

The SBAs will of course revert back to the RoC to do with as it wishes.

But in true Cypriot hospitality mode, I am sure we can keep the "Britishness" connection going, in some form, for old time's sake. :D

Therefore, I suggest we come-up with some British connected ventures, that are more suitable in Cyprus.

I'll start with re-locating the Wimbledon Tennis Championships ..... since they are usually a wash-out, weather wise 8)

I fear if there's any "British connection", it would be because their massive natural spaces had been turned into horrible tourist traps for the English overflow from Agia Napa, Limassol and Paphos.

But you think the UK's going to give up a military/intelligence base in the Eastern Mediterranean/Middle East now, of all times!?

I can never see it happening but if it does I am sure they will turn into Russian holiday villages or theme parks. Hey just a thought but what with the Israelis investing heavilly in Cyprus at the moment who knows they may become Israeli holiday villages.

We had some fantastic times entertaining Israelis in Troodos and Platres in the 60s, some of the best people we ever met abroad.

The current rumour regarding the Ghost town that is now Episkopi Garrisson is that what is left will soon be transfered to Akrotiri.

I am sure the British will scale down cosiderably in the next decade and Cyprus may only hold a very small garrison.
Let's hope Israelis will still be welcome in Cyprus.

Where downtown?

They had a communications intelligence relay centre inside their embassy, and a "naval unit" in Nicosia (outside their embassy), presumably connected to the Sixth Fleet; I suppose that might be the thing you're talking about. But "naval unit" was a euphemism for "intelligence", so I would have thought they would have been trying to keep it a secret.

I don't know, but I'd be interested to find out. They've got places on both sides, haven't they?

Yes now or very soon as they have no money! They need some new money-making ventures.

Wimbledon Tennis could transfer over with specialist sporting training facilities (maximise the good weather here), use the pre-existing SBA housing for accommodation. That way they could extend the Tournament times, maybe have a few Championships throughout the year.

It would be a JOINT Cypriot-Brit venture with proceeds-sharing to be negotiated :D

And you think we'd share our profits with you when we don't even pay our rent to you?
