SKI-preo wrote:Maybe massive reforestation project right to the effing coastline which would resist the salination of the natural aquifers being effed up the backside by illegal water bores... but I guarantee it would more likely be used for something obscene like a tacky Cypriot Las Vegas style Casino hub. Why don't the extremist Turkish Cypriots wanting there own apartheid state fortress themselves there and let the remaining Turkish CYpriots who are democrats can return to the Pafos properties or wherever they came from who want to take part in a Cypriot democracy so I can go to my village in the Kyrenia area. I better get off the internet as I am getting more and more pissed off!. (Just googled earthed my house occupied by thieving fukwits).

Who would have thought just a few years ago (or even months according to some patriotic Brits) that THE Great Britain will become so poor she would have to give up the "Sovereign" Bases.

Don't worry, changes are happening. Balance of power shifts; and Turkey's been clinging on the brink, denying the obvious BUT she will be next ( in months) to leave this country.

THE Ministry of Defence is drawing up emergency cuts including the scrapping of the Officer Training Corps (OTC) and the withdrawal of troops from Cyprus.
.....

Withdrawal of forces from Cyprus, where 3,000 British troops are based, would be controversial. Britain’s “sovereign base areas”, which cost the MoD about £300m a year, were created when the island gained independence in 1960.

Cyprus is used by British troops as a forward base, with a battalion of infantry held there as reinforcements for Afghanistan, and troops returning from the front line are taken there for rest and recuperation between operations.

Officials believe about £100m could be saved if most of the troops are moved back to the UK. “The practice of using Cyprus is long-standing, but no one has stood back and asked whether it is still a good idea,” a defence source said. “Many soldiers don’t regard Cyprus as a jolly, but would rather be back home if not on the front line.”

What you seam to forget is the words Sovereign means just what it says, Sovereign now say after me Sovereign, that's a good boy ,you are starting to learn. it belongs to the crown, the British Crown and will so for perpetuity.

I see you mentioned a fitting place for EOKA fighters memorial I think Kyrenia castle would be more fitting after all that's where a lot of them met their just ends.

Oh sorry I forgot you cant go there can you!!

Haven't read the whole thread but I would be surprised if the Brits gave up ALL the SBA land. Do you have a link to anywhere that it states that?

What I read was that they were going to give up a percentage of it (on some conditions or other) and that it was land they did not use for anything much and found expensive to maintain.
