Alternative Uses for the SBAs ....

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

"If ever the Brits hand over the bases, You keep Akrotiri, Dhekelia to be given to the TCs."

It is said in jest, but here is the probable next flash point. Which brings us back to the question of territory and clear definitions that are needed in any future settlement. I have posted about this point enough times already.

If the TCs claim X percentage of the island, then they relinquish any claims to the rest. That is fair. The SBA are a matter between the GCs and the British. We have unfinished business in which the TCs need not be involved.

I heard it rumoured that Akrotiri is to be "civilianised" rather than handed back.

I am sure there will be some dollars flying around somewhere, I have heard more American accents getting off planes at Akrotiri than in previous years.

I know this thread is already old news bt I thought I'd resurrect it anyway

How about affordable housing for young Cypriots who must be dreading trying to get a mortgage? The infrastructure is there for a new town ,Housing, shops , bars , restaurants, Workshops and offices another idea would be to use the existing facilities as a new university campus.

Just a couple of ideas off the top of my kefali

Crime busting ....

UNHCR official in "KKTC" arrested for human smuggling

The Turkish Cypriot police press office announced over the weekend that Kıvanç Aktuğ, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative in the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" ("KKTC"), has been arrested on charges of human smuggling.

Aktuğ (65), H.A. (46) and three Iraqi citizens who had illegally entered the "KKTC" with help from Aktuğ and H.A. were arrested in a joint operation by the "KKTC" and the UK's Sovereign Base Areas Police Service on the island, a statement from the "KKTC" Police Office said Saturday.

The police say that Aktuğ and H.A. were providing entrance of Iraqi and Palestinian people to the "KKTC" from ports and airports after being bribed. Then, by violating a first-level forbidden military zone, police say, the two were taking those people to southern Cyprus without getting permission from authorities. This illegal activity continued from October 2008 to Feb. 12, the statement said.

Aktuğ's Human Relief Mission (HRM) was handling the cases of "between 500 and 600" asylum seekers in the north for the UNHCR, Greek Cypriot media recently reported.

Meanwhile, a statement from the "KKTC" presidency underlined that Aktuğ was appointed by the UN, but not by the "KKTC". Turkish Cypriot authorities had cooperated with him upon the UN's request, it said.

Aktuğ's arrest is new evidence that international organizations' cooperation with "KKTC" authorities is necessary and appropriate instead of those organizations independently launching activities in northern Cyprus, the statement said.

Have you been to Episkopi lately it's like a ghost town? The same applied to Dhekelia (Spelling), the houses are mostly empty.
Happy Valley and Tunnel beach are the same.

So what are you saying ... the evacuation has began?

The financial burden must have been so enormous; with the UK completely bankrupt, Bases abroad are a luxury (and archaic relics), they could well do without!
