Ercakica weekly Brifing

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Ercakica weekly Brifing

Postby halil » Tue Jan 13, 2009 7:28 pm

The TRNC Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica has said that the continued efforts by the Greek Cypriot Administration to arm itself demonstrated it’s insincerity on reaching a political settlement in Cyprus.

Speaking during his weekly press briefing the Presidential Spokesman said the Greek Cypriot Side’s continued armament policy raised tensions and deepened insecurity between the two sides.

The Presidential Spokesman told reporters today that the Greek Cypriot Side’s ongoing efforts to purchase more weapons and arms, at a time when negotiations were continuing to reach a settlement, constituted a major obstacle in the way of finding a solution to the Cyprus Problem.

He said that the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias’s approach towards proposals put forward by President Mehmet Ali Talat to reach a solution in 2009 were disturbing.

Ercakica stated that none of the proposals put forward by the Greek Cypriot Side had anything to do with past documents prepared by the UN for a settlement.

“The Greek Cypriot Side’s attempts to slander the Turkish Cypriot Side’s stance at the talks are part of its efforts to hide its intransigence,” he added.

Pointing out that he Greek Cypriot Side’s continued efforts to arm itself was proof it does not want a solution, Ercakica said that the Greek Cypriot Side’s armament activities did not only raise tensions between the two leaders who are carrying out talks but also between the two peoples on the island.

“This increases the feeling of insecurity between the two sides and reduces the chances of reaching a settlement on the island” he said.
Responding to a question, the Presidential Spokesman said that the Turkish Cypriot Side was not uncomfortable with the contacts carried out by the UN Special Advisor Alexander Downer on the sidelines of the negotiations process.

We believe that such contacts will increase the effectiveness of the UN, which we hope will bring conciliator proposals to the table” Ercakica added.

Explaining that all issues and aspects of the Cyprus Problem will have to be negotiated if a settlement is to be reached, the Presidential Spokesman said that the Greek Cypriot Side has prevented the Annan Plan from forming a basis at the talks.

Announcing that President Mehmet Ali Talat will be flying to Ankara on Friday to receive an honorary medal for his contributions to the TURKSOY Opera Days, Ercakica said that with the framework of his contacts in the Turkish capital, the President is also expected to meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Chief of Staff General Basbug.

This guys thinking process appears to be worse than George Bush's, if that ever was possible. The above had very little news and a lot of propaganda.

Let me get this straiight. Erchakica objects to the RoC arming itself, but then tells us that Talat will meet with the Turkish Armed Forces chief.

What will Talat say to the Chief? That he should withdraw his army from Cyprus?

Maybe it is to discuss this development and how to counter it? Do we have that right?

Halil, can you tell Mr. Ercakica that since the Turkish army maintains in Cyprus three (3) times more troops than the Greek Cypriots, and two (2) times more tanks and artillery, we will very happily cancel out all new purchases of armament, once Turkey limits its military presence in Cyprus down to the same levels as the Cypriot National Guard. Go and tell him the good news, and let us know what he will reply to you. Until them, both you and Mr. Ercakica will remain the biggest hypocrites in every single GC's eyes!

It's not the first time that Talat or other TC officials visit GOT officials for exchange od ideas and evaluation of the developments regarding Cyprus issue.

Although purchase of new weapons and arms by GC administration not a big deal, puts a question mark on the minds. If they hope a solution for Cyprus problem would be reached in a few years time and followed by demilitarization why do GC administration waste a lot of money for armament... It seems, even becoming obvious that the negotiations between Talat and Kristofyas is a mere formality. Borh parties have hidden agendas as usual.... most probably...

Do not "worry" Insan, the tanks we are ordering ("T-90,") and the missile systems, ("Tor-M1,") will be the same models Greece is purchasing from Russia, and should a solution comes around; they will be shifted to Greece to salvage some of the cash. If not, since they will be a very modern equipment, they will be easily sold elsewhere.
