CYPRUS TURKISH FOOTBALL FEDERATION GIVES ITS SUPPORT TO PROPOSALS
Look out football fans, here we come.
The Cyprus Turkish Football Federation has given signals that good developments are taking place that will allow Turkish Cypriot football teams to join other football teams around the world.
The President of the Cyprus Turkish Football Federation Omer Adal, has announced that the federation supports the creation in principal of the ‘Cyprus Football Federation’ which is seen as a formula to open the way for Turkish Cypriot football teams to play matches in the international arena.
Noting that the federation accepts the proposal in principle, Mr Adal said that in a few days time, the final shape of the proposal that will be prepared by FIFA would be sent to the Cyprus Football Federation KOP and the Turkish Cypriot Football Federation.
He said if a consensus is reached on the proposal, then the Cyprus Turkish football Federation wants a ‘good will document’ or a ‘preliminary agreement’ to be signed at the meeting to be organised by FIFA and UEFA on the 2nd of February.
‘If a preliminary agreement is reached then for the joint documents to be official, then the sides concerned will come together after the 2nd of February to sign the documents’, he added.
TRNC President TALAT Views on the issue :
PRESIDENT TALAT: KOP MEMBERSHIP WILL LEAD TO THE DISSOLVE OF TURKISH CYPRIOT INSTITUTIONS
President Mehmet Ali Talat has strongly reacted against the possibility of the Cyprus Turkish Football Federation becoming a member of the Cyprus Football Federation-KOP which is run by the Greek Cypriot Side.
“
This is no way possible” the President said, stressing that such a development will then lead to the dissolve of Turkish Cypriot-based institutions.
Speaking on BRT’s first channel last night, Mr Talat said becoming a member to the KOP will mean the patching of a Turkish Cypriot institution.
“In such a case, the Greek Cypriot football will only be directed by the Greek Cypriot Committee while the Turkish Cypriot football will be in the hands of UEFA, FIFA, KOP and the Cyprus Turkish Football Federation all at once.
That means, the Greek Cypriot possession will belong to Greek Cypriots, but what the Turkish Cypriot side owns will be common. How come this can be possible? That’s not reasonable.” the President explained.
President Talat said if Turkish Cypriot institutions would become members to Greek Cypriot-run institutions or registered under them, then he would have to continue negotiations for political adherence to Greek Cypriots- which he said would never do so.
Answering a question on the Greek Cypriot side’s armament policy as it prepares to buy new weapons from Russia, Talat stated that such developments create a negative effect over the negotiations process and the Turkish Cypriot motivation for a settlement.
Stressing the need for reaching a political settlement in Cyprus within 2009, he warned that the non-solution will settle down if the solution process lingers further.
The President reiterated the Turkish Cypriot demand for reaching a solution before the European Parliament’s elections in June.
However the current speed at negotations will not be enough to realize this goal he said, adding that setting up a time-table for negotiations will make this possible.
Also touching upon the issue of early general election which is going to take place on the 19th of April, Mr Talat pointed to the importance of not turning the election into a referendum and called on political parties to use the common sense.
He said he wants the newly-formed government to back up the solution vision jointly maintained with Turkey, warning that the opposite will lead to a chaos.
