Israel Agrees to Pay U.N. $10.5 Million for Gaza War Damage

UNITED NATIONS -- Israel agreed to pay the U.N. $10.5 million in compensation for damage to U.N. property and for the life of a U.N. driver during Israel's war last winter in Gaza, according to two U.N. officials.

"Agreement has been reached in principle on the terms of an arrangement under which Israel would make a payment to the United Nations," said Martin Nesirky, the U.N. spokesman. "The United Nations is now waiting for a green light from the government of Israel and we anticipate receiving that green light imminently."

Amnesty urges Israel to release or try three Palestinians

Human rights group Amnesty International urged Israel on Friday to release or fairly try three Palestinian jailed for protesting against the West Bank separation barrier. The three, two of whom are held without charges, may be “prisoners of conscience, held for legitimately voicing their opposition to the fence/wall,” Amnesty said in a letter to Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Palestinian official: Israel razed 150 Arab homes in West Bank

Israeli security forces on Sunday knocked down shelters that were home to about 150 Palestinians in the West Bank, Palestinian officials said.

A spokesman for the Civil Administration, Israel's authority in the West Bank, said 14 "illegally constructed structures were removed".

Israel ignores demand to probe Gaza war

Israel on Friday submitted to the United Nations its first official response to the Goldstone Report, which accused the Jewish state of committing war crimes in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead.

The response did not address the international demand to appoint an independent commission of inquiry into the Gaza operation.
