When all of us here can answer that question honestly and sincerely then let us talk about the settler question and rights etc."
Well folks, can you give an honest answer to the above? How do you view the possibility of settlers being legalised and eventually seeking elected office? How would you deal with the possibility of mainland Greeks and Turks holding positions of power in a post solution Cyprus?
To make my attitude clear- if the above happened in Cyprus I would give up on the island altogether.
Nikitas,
To reply to your question first in a roundabout way : since Cyprus joined the EU, it has had Swedes, Latvians, Spaniards, Greeks, Irish etc as its administrators, with laws passed in the EP made by Germans, French and Czech MEPs, with directives issued by Commissioners from Finland, Portugal and Belgium. That Turks, including the sons and daughters of 'settlers', would be MEPs, Commissioners and EU civil servants ruling over Cyprus is of no negative consequence, indeed I'd welcome it. Just as I'd welcome Cypriots ruling over Turkey in the EU.
What actually do we have to fear or object to ?
Unless you subscribe to a basically racist proposition that a 'settler' is somehow congenitally hostile to everything Cypriot then one can accept (and encourage) the idea that they can be properly and fairly be incorporated not just into north Cyprus but into wider Cypriot society.
Or you can continue the cycle of violence and expulsions for further generation. We are the authors of our own future.
