Wrong Deniz, there were a few hotels right at the heart of Troodos. My father used to take us there every summer for a couple of weeks. There was the Pingos, Jubilee, Dolphin and a few others. Only a couple of them are open now. The Jubilee was my favourite as it had also very large tents as part of the hotel which one could stay in, of course they had electricity in them as well (I believe it was an old British military summer camp turned into a hotel). It gave us the feeling of being at a camp site with all the modern amenities.
The best hotel around the Troodos range now IMO is the Mylos at Kakopetria which I am booked in for tomorrow. The trout is delicious.
Hi kafenes, Played a gig in the Jubilee in 1966; remember the tents very well.
Hi Free Spirit, in 1966 I was 10yo but remember the summer holidays just like yesterday. I can't remember any concerts there but as I was also studying the piano at the time, I was very interested in any sort of music. I would stand for hours waiting for the British marching band at Larnaca see front to see them. I distinctly remember the bass drum player who had a leopard skin on his back and always wandered why.
Tradition I guess, although our Bass drummer used to snore loudly so we used to put the leopard skin over his head.
In 1966/7 the regiment in Dhekelia was the 2nd Royal Anglian Regiment.
My regiment The York & Lancasters was at Episkopi.
