Political Equality for 2 major communities of Cyprus

Postby insan » Sat Jan 10, 2009 4:05 am

Who supports political equality at community basis and who does not and why?

As far as i know Akel and Hristofyas support it but they want to make sure of that it won't be abused for any purpose by any parties... Right?

"In short, it is incorrect to speak of ‘two separate peoples’ or ‘a single people’ in Cyprus. For it is neither sufficient to invoke ethnic or similar differences to justify the existence of a separate people, nor necessarily the fact of shared geographical space to justify the existence of a single people. In the law of nations, the notion of a people is above all political. A people is a community that dwells within the same state, is connected by ties of citizenship to that state, has a legislative capacity and consists of participating citizens who share a common public space. In Cyprus there currently does not exist such a political order. Thus it appears to be more meaningful to strive for the creation of a federal Cyprus state, to unite the ethnic communities under the umbrella of the same state, to grant them combined legislative capacity and to enable them to share a common public space than to prolong the ‘single or double’ squabble. Such a development may lead to the future emergence of a Cypriot people, as was the case in Switzerland, America, Belgium, India and other countries.
By searching in Cyprus’ past, we will find neither a ‘Cypriot people’ nor ‘two peoples’. We thus need to turn our faces towards the future."

Sorry Insan. Realistically the TCs were never a major community in Cyprus.

There is / was only one major community, the GCs (84%). In Maths that would be rounded up to 100  ... The rest are minor communities.

From GR!'s link: http://www.un.int/cyprus/profile.htm

People

Population:

total: 732,900 (84.7% Greek Cypriots, 12.3% Turkish Cypriots, 3.0% others)

Government Controlled area: 641,700 (July 1995 est.)

Turkish occupied area: 91,000 (July 1995 est.)

I think the British community might soon outnumber you as the next minor community :?

I support the real political equality, which is political equality among equal citizens without racist descriminations.

By political equality we refer to the extent to which citizens have an equal voice over governmental decisions. One of the bedrock principles in a democracy is the equal consideration of the preferences and interests of all citizens. This is expressed in such principles as one-person/one-vote,
equality before the law, and equal rights of free speech.

Don't worry abt our population percentage, dear. I well know u have a great pleasure of seeing TC population getting less on Cyprus. It well serves ur long awaited aspirations. U need to ask urself how many times u and ur alikes became hopeful abt TCs and Turkeys weaknesses and then u fell into a frustration with a big surprise. Be sure of that in case of a lasting solution to Cyprus problem, vast majority of outside TCs r ready to return.

So... u r against Akel's stance regarding political equality of 2 major communities of Cyprus?

hi oracle
i always wonder when i go into nicosia, where all the greek cypriots are?
full of sri lankans and chinese, lol.
maybe the russians will out number the brits in cyprus?
i think since joining the e.u, cyprus will end up a country of mixed cultures as the uk is now.
shame i know but i think it is inevitable.

Hi rac

Happy new year to you!

I have no problem with Cyprus being a multicultural society, as indeed it happens to be. If and when the TCs see the light and remove the Turkish troops and their entourage, I'm sure they could rejoin this multicultural democracy, much like everyone else who respects the RoC.

What I object to, is this outdated "community" system. They come as one-man-one-vote individuals, or they really will have trouble convincing the EU, and others, that they deserve all these special conditions .... and for what reason? Why are they special?
