Advice on Moving to Cyprus

Postby The Lough Family » Fri Jan 09, 2009 1:31 pm

Hi There, we are newbies, we are a family from the North East of England, and we're looking to move out to Cyprus. We have been going to the islasnd for about 18 years, but dont know enough about the first steps to take for moving there.

We have three children, 14, 6 and 2 so schools would have to be high up on our agenda for move.

Can anyone let us know the do's and dont's, whether it would be beneficial to have your own buusiness or to work for someone? etc etc

Thanks for you help in advance.

I would advise you to look on other forums that are more aimed at answering that kind of enquiry.

I would tell you where, but Lana would get nasty with me (ooh, nice!).

I have it on good authority that Lana is a dear sweet person, helps old ladies across the road, puts food out for starving birds (and British ex-pats affected by the decline of GB£), gives generously to charity and is loved by all those who cross her path.

But to get back to the topic; I suggest you trawl through the Forum for old threads that might be relevant and use the Search faciliy. Failing that, post your email address and Lana - if she is in a good mood - might contact you directly and try to answer your questions.

Now, where is that butterfly I was pulling the wings off......

Lana, I mean, 'someone else'

Welcome!

For general and basic information you can't go wrong working your way through Cyprus AngloInfo forum.

It covers the whole island and I would suggest you read through their Essential Information pages http://cyprus.angloinfo.com/anglofile.asp and also some of the threads in General http://cyprus.angloinfo.com/forum/forum.asp?FID=7 and the Employment sections (Jobs Offered) http://cyprus.angloinfo.com/forum/forum.asp?FID=11 and (Jobs Wanted) http://cyprus.angloinfo.com/forum/forum.asp?FID=12

These should give you some good insight and grounding for questions you will want in the coming weeks.

Good luck!

We've been here 5yrs and haven't regretted a single moment. But, we do know others who have returned so it isn't all plain sailing. You must do your homework and be coming for the right reasons. If you use it as an "escape route" rather than a "lifestyle change" you may be very disappointed.

Life for working people with school age children is tougher than for the likes of us who are here without children. We are working but salaries do not compare in the slightest with those in UK and remember, it is us who are the "foreigners" in Cyprus....

If you don't already read the online version of the English language Cyprus newspaper, The Cyprus Mail may I suggest that it will do no harm to do so daily on
http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/

It tells you more about the real Cyprus, crime, dangerous drivers, untrustworthy lawyers, developer' property scams, unsafe deeds (30,000 foreigners have not received their deeds which developers may have mortgaged to banks after they have sold properties and have been paid) and other problems you may face, none of which estate agents are likely to tell you about.

Searching the archives on the website could also be an eye-opener.

If you still go ahead I wish you good luck.

I see you’ve been relegated to the tourism reception desk…you do a much better job here than in politics!
