First ladies in Cyprus Oya Talat and Elizabeth Christofias are preparing to lead the year’s first bi-communal children’s event.
All proceeds from the event will go to the education of children with special needs on both sides of the island.
The event, which is called “the circle of love”, will take place tomorrow evening at 6 pm.
As part of the event, Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot children, aged between 12 and 15, will gather in the old city of Lefkosa to create a large circle along the city walls, holding specially designed lanterns.
The Children, who will be accompanied by their teachers, families and volunteers, will be aligned along the old Venetian city walls 5 and 6.30 pm.
A special stage will also be established near the Ledra Palace where special shows will be displayed.
Messagesd of love, peace, friendship and solidarity will also be read out at the event.
Among those providing support to the bi-communal event are the Cyprus Turkish Cooperative Central Bank and the Platform for Unimpeded Solidarity from the North, as well as the Bank of Laiki and the Marathon Radio from the South.
In a statement issued on the event, first lady Oya Talat said that they were finally organizing the humanitarian event, which she added needed to be done years ago, tomorrow night.
Oya Talat pointed out that there people on both sides of the divide which were in need of help, special education and rehabilitation institutions as well as health institutions.
She said proceeds from the event which will be held in cooperation with Greek Cypriots will be collected in a joint account which will be used for the needs of children on both sides of the island.
“The children of Cyprus, irrelevant of their language, religion or race, all share the same feelings, emotions and joys of life is the joint message we will be giving out” said Oya Talat.
