Following the informative meeting with political parties on peace negotiations, Mehmet Ali Talat paid a visit to Turkish Cypriot tradesmen in the Arasta area and then crossed over to South Cyprus from the Lokmaci crossing gate.
He was invited by the Greek Cypriot Politis Newspaper for lunch in South Cyprus.
President Mehmet Ali Talat crossed over to South Cyprus today from the Lokmaci crossing Gate accompanied by his private secretary Asim Akansoy and Presidential spokesman Hasan Ercakica.
Politics Newspaper Chief Editor Yorgos Karkaris and an employee greeted President Talat and his companions at Ledra Street.
Asked by journalists what he was doing in the South, President Talat said he had crossed over upon the invitation he had received from the Politis Newspaper to have lunch.
‘I also saw this as an opportunity to wish a happy New Year to all Cypriots and express my best wishes for the New Year’, he added.
President Talat said ‘I believe the 2009 will be a year of peace. As the Turkish Cypriot side this is our aim’.
Upon being asked a question regarding the return of a New Years gift sent by him to the Greek Cypriot DIKO leader Marios Karoyan, President Talat said ‘there was a bottle of local wine, with a TRNC label on it in the gift basket. This wasn’t done purposely. I don’t understand why Mr. Karoyan reacted in this way. In previous years I have sent similar New Year baskets to late Tasos Papadopoulos who had no problem in accepting the gifts’.
Upon being asked another questiong concerning the property issue that will be taken up during the next negoations process meeting between the two leader, the President said he was hopeful of the negotiations process.
‘When we come to the give and take stage of the process I just hope we become more harmonious’, he added.
Noting that they had to accept the fact that the property issue is one of the thorniest issues on the negotiating table, the President said ‘we must keep this in mind and be very careful and patient. Otherwise the negotiations process can be ruined’.
