Piratis we do not have a problem if Greeks use Konstantinople when speaking Greek, but the English name for the city is Istanbul and it should be pronounced as "Istanbul" in the English news of PIK. But when you insist on "Constantinople" when speaking in English is a kind of complex, since you have lost this city to the glorious Ottoman Empire. You know this city was no more than a village in Byzantine and it was the Ottomans who turned this city into a wonder. (This post is written in the same language of yours )

and sadly what piratis said is partly true. our teacher was telling us how when she visited asia minor in turkey the tour guide tried to pass some ancient greek monuments as turkish but when my (ancient greek) teacher asked the tour guide to translate one of the plaques he just ignored her and moved on

Hmm maybe he dont know ancient greekish?
I mean I dont think Greeks write english at that times.
Monuments of Greeks wont underestimated by Turkey.

Well, I have never ever heard a Greek calling Istanbul anything else than "Konstantinople/Konstantinoupoli". I call it Istanbul only when talking to foreigners (non Turks or Cypriots) who may 'blink" if I call it Konstantinople (kind of difficult in any case as the "Greek" name is well known)...

Forget the city for a second... what about the various districts? How do you call "Psomathia" for instance? Why Galata?

Well, I have never ever heard a Greek calling Istanbul anything else than "Konstantinople/Konstantinoupoli". I call it Istanbul only when talking to foreigners (non Turks or Cypriots) who may 'blink" if I call it Konstantinople (kind of difficult in any case as the "Greek" name is well known)...

thats because most greeks are under the impression that istanbul/konstantinoupouli is greek. but its not. its as turkish as thessaoliniki is greek.

at the turn of the previous century more greeks lived in istanbul than turks according to demographics just like more bulgarians lived in thessaoliniki than greeks.

that was over 100 years ago though. time to move on.

No one denies Konstantinoupoli is Turkish but the name is a different game... for some reason the city is still known as "Konstantinople" to many (don't think it's any sort of greek propaganda involved)... it's probably more nostalgia than anything else...

And You can call as you wish.
But Its formal name is Istanbul.
