I cant help but notice the extra bit of information you kept there. Very thoughtful of you.

Just for the sake of completion ... don't want to be accused of snipping ends!

I could have just posted this bit, and it would have been enough I guess ... :D

Nicosia was first inhabited over 5000 years ago. It was first known as Ledra during the Hellenistic period, but later the name was changed to Lefkothea under the Ptolemists.

Dear Oracle, Thank you for that information but there is really no need to shout.
On the internet, bold and large size fonts are considered to be shouting.

If you wish to communicate with us I am afraid you will need to change your habits. Most of us Lurucadis are gentle folk and all that.

 I thought Lefkosia was renamed to “Nicos-ia” by the British in honor of the statesman Nicos Sampson!

You know, you could be right there but not because he was a "statesman" but the Brits probably thought of him as a donkey.

Nicos-eeaaaa---eeeeaa" which later was shortened to "Nicos-ia".

Very amusing, perhaps more realistic reason could have been that there may have been lots of people named Nigoli in Lefkoşa hence the name Nigo sia. This is with the assumption that in whichever language the word sia means the land of. And of course our british cousins being stiff upper lip and all that converted the name to Nicosia ( pronounced Nicoooooosia.)
