Would Enosis be a reality in 1974 if......................,

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

So in 1974 there would be no union with Greece, because the Cypriot people themselves wouldn't want or allow this. (unlike the TCs who are more than happy to be ruled by the military junta of Ankara)

Thank you. You finally got there. During the coup in 1974, would the coupists have succeeded in achieving Enosis or did the legal forces (pro-Makarios) have enough power to regain control? Were the Greek speakng people willing to fight the Junta backed forces?

Deniz ... before you go any further .... do you have any evidence that Enosis was the goal for the Junta?

I take it you don't have any either, other than speculation by the TCs and excuses from Turkey to justify their invasion.

Why would they merely over-throw Makarios and plant another Cypriot as President, keeping it as a republic if their aim was Enosis?

They would not have replaced the President, but just declared us as part of Greece. This, they never did!

No. Doesnt meant there wasnt/isnt.

I am trying see what the Greek speaking populace were thinking at the time. All I know and remember is the constant shouts of EOKA and ENOSIS. It was in the news, the printed media, people were talking about it. I want to find out what forumers think they know about the GCs desire for/against Enosis.

I'd like to think that GCs had given up on the idea, then I wonder if I am fooling myself.

Get Real! wrote:Having experienced Cyprus in the early seventies and right up to the Turkish invasion, I was quite convinced at the time that enosis with Greece had already happened... the national anthem was Greek, the flags, the school materials were provided by Greece, subsidized tertiary education in Greece, everyone went on about Athens this and Athens that, the army was controlled by Greece, etc, etc, etc.

The only thing left that wasn't Greek was the government and that was forcefully replaced via the coup.

How much more Greece could they have possibly shoved down my throat with an “official” enosis?

What would an “official” enosis with Greece possibly involve that wasn’t already implemented? :?

Nothing was "shoved down your throat". That is how it is when you are living in a Greek island with a predominantly Greek population.

If you were born and live in Cyprus (were you?), from Cypriot parents (are they?) and your mother tongue is Greek (is it?) and from what I gather you are even a Greek Orthodox Cristian, and somehow you believe you are not Greek, then that is abnormal in my opinion, but it is your right. You can identify yourself as "Chirokitian" or anything else you want, but you should also recognize the right to everybody else to identify as they wish as well. The vast majority of Cypriots are Greek, even if you are not, and you should recognize this fact.

No we are not.

If you had followed the argument correctly , you would have noticed that the statement was in relation only to GC's .

Hello Oracle, i highly recommend u to visit www.cyprus-conflict.net. There u will get all the details abt events of 15th of July till 15th of August. Onwards and backwards as well. For a comprehensive analyze of the events u also need to undertsnad the relations of Western alliance which Greece and Turkey r 2 memebers of it. Globalization, Nato, Megali Idea, Fascism, Leftism, Cold War, Religious Traditions, Enosis, Taksim, US foreign policy and its priorities, historical background of Turks and Hellenes r the keywords u need.

Cheers ;d and im waiting Bananiot and u to come visit me :)

Ps: However it seems like the great educational website Cyprus-conflict.net has been frozen by ... :(

OK point taken, I am still not too familiar with these emotional messages.
