Postby halil » Sat Jan 03, 2009 7:52 pm

Teacher from the Northern Cyprus and South Cyprus came together yesterday and pledged to work for peace in Cyprus.

The teachers consisting of the Greek Cypriot United Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot Teachers Platform gathered at Ledra Street yesterday to celebrate the New Year.

Teachers from the north provided ekmek kadayif a local sweet while teachers from the south provided the wine.

Speaking during the event the President of the Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers Union Adnan Eraslan said ‘we believe that teachers can help knock down the walls. Politicians are moving slowly in this process, but we are here to support them because each day is a loss to both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. We hope that 2009 will be a year that is very good for us and we will work very hard for this and cooperate together and will make this an island of peace and hope.’

Greek Cypriot platform member Kostis Ahniotis for his part expressed the hope that the year 2009 will be the year of peace and called for the barricades and walls between the two sides to be knocked down.

The President of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers Platform Guven Varoglu read a joint declaration prepared by the platform at the event.
Then a cake was cut with the hope that peace and a solution will be found in Cyprus.

Following the cutting of the cake, the platform members then moved on to the Lokmaci barricade.

Making a short speech here, the general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers Union Sener Elcil said that Cypriots have no patients with the non-solution in Cyprus and called on the two leaders in Cyprus to unite Cyprus.

Following this statement the joint declaration was singed by platform members.
