Elections in the North

Postby AWE » Fri Jan 02, 2009 2:35 am

The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) the bigger partner of the coalition government decided on early elections in 2009 but the date has not yet been selected. In his statement the Prime Minister and Leader of CTP, Ferdi Sabit Soyer, said that the party has reviewed in detail the recent political and economic developments as well as the talks on the Cyprus Problem.

Given the the UBP are likely to win an election and that Turkey is slowing and being slowed in it's EU; bid does this mean another 8 years (some 32 Chapters to go, closing 2 per EU presidency) assuming no other political problems (big assumption) of division in Cyprus? As if these set of talks fail then the reason for a Cyprus solution, Turkey's EU membership, disappears.

This ballot could well be a referendum on what the Turkish Cypriots want for themselves. The CTP is - under Talat and Soyer - negotiating, but the UBP under Eroglu would be rejectionist. If the UBP won, and this would not be unlikely given the disappointment of the Turkish Cypriot electorate after their appoval of the Annan plan, then you may as well stop negotiating...

No more voting by me or any member of my family any more.
We refuse to take part in the dirty games Turkey plays through elections in north Cyprus.

I gave him and his party more than a chance my friend...
I supported and voted for them all my life and look at the way they changed as soon as they came to power.. (or should i say brought to power by Turkey)
I have come to believe no matter what we want (the TC's) Turkey has enough imported votes in north Cyprus to do as she likes through elections.
I know its too late but at least i want the keep my conscience clear in the future knowing i was not a part of whatever happens...

Bananiot looks like President Talat will go and Eroğlu will be the next President, unfortunately the GCs did not utilize the best man for the job as he was the ıne who caused the possiblity of a solution in Ankara, they will have a tougher time with Eroğlu as he like the late Papadop is a nationalistic rejectionist, who bares no affiliations to GCs or their concerns, I cant even see him coming to the negotiating table, he will influence Turkey to keep well away.
