Paphos cooks up world record gyros

PAPHOS HAS gone one step further in putting its name on the map after breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s largest gyros (doner kebab) yesterday.
The gigantic meat fest was recorded at 10am yesterday by Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas and the Record Certification Committee made up of the General Director of Paphos Hospital Dr Phylaktis Constantinides and Deputy District Officer Ioannis Metaxas.
The gigantic slab of meat weighed in at 4,022kg, beating the former record for the world’s largest gyros, 3,750kg, held by a town in Mexico.
Vergas noted that Paphos had made it once again to the Guinness Book of World Records, after getting the results of the weigh in.
The town also holds the record for the largest Vasilopitta (traditional New Year’s Day cake) in the world since 2000.
The Paphos Municipality decided in October that they would attempt to break the world gyros record on New Year’s Eve.
“As a council, we feel very bad that the people of Paphos haven’t really been given a chance to celebrate the New Year, while the other towns do. Although it’s a huge financial risk, and it could all be washed out by rain, we’ve decided to do something special this year,” Paphos councillor Nicos Similides said at the time.
Not even the cold weather could stop the Paphians, however, as the world record success was just one of many festivities lined up for Paphos last night, including a concert, fireworks, satire and mime at the October 28 Square.
