HAPPY 7 YEARS OLD EURO BIRTHDAY

Postby miltiades » Thu Jan 01, 2009 10:33 am

The Euro is 7 years old today. Contrary to such "experts as Margaret Thatcher , as well as ex Chancellors , Lord Healey and Lord Lamont along with Lord Shore an ex Trade minister under Labour who vehemently opposed the Euro and all believed that it would fail , the Euro has been a phenomenal success overtaking the $ as the reserve currency in an increasing number of markets.
Happy birthday EURO !!

As a currency, it is actually 10 years old, but notes and coins became legal tender 7 years ago.

You are referring to to the MU -Monetary Union which is indeed 10 years old.

""Ten years ago today monetary union for the eurozone was established. Three years later the euro was born. Throughout the currency's gestation and launch, the panjandrums of British politics confidently predicted failure.""

happy new year to you .

In fact all our utensils are going up in price since all are imported !!

Just to give some examples of "historical currency rates " STG against Euro US$ and Chinese YR

Jan 2009 £ 1 = 1 01 euro Jan 2008 £1 = 1.48 Euro drop 30%
Jan 2009 £1 = $ 1.45 Jan 2008 £ = $1.96 drop 26%
Jan 2009 £1 = 9.93 YR Jan 2008 £ = 14.50 drop 31%

So the dramatic fall of Stg has meant an increase of goods imported into the UK by roughly 30% !!!!!

Yes, but great bargains for people with Euros who can purchase the UK's current stock of imported goods over the internet.

To complete my kitchen equipment I am after a Kenwood Chef Major KM023 Kitchen Machine Mega Pack (Titanium) which in Cyprus is about 800 Euros, in the UK it is as low as GBP415, so I could fly over, buy one and still be better off!

Sorry M but the Euro remains, despite the fall in GB sterling over the past few months, very unpopular in GB.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7806936.stm

...according to which 71% oppose adopting the Euro.

The Euro's strength does not bode well for CY's tourism and construction sectors for 2009. The plonkers in CY government should have paid a lot more attention to expanding in to Euroland markets but still have an over-reliance on the GB market. Who will holiday or buy property in CY with sterling/euro at parity?
