Wrap up folks, it is going to be a chilly!
Two more days of rain and snow
By Jacqueline Theodoulou
CYPRUS can look forward to another two days of rain and snow, before the skies clear up on New Year’s day.
According to the Meteorological Services, the unstable weather will continue until tomorrow, with rain across the country, falling as light snow in the Troodos Mountains.
The skies are expected to clear by Thursday, though this will be accompanied by a dip in temperatures.
The head of the Services, Kyriacos Theophilou, said that Cyprus was being affected by a low pressure system.
“Of course, this system probably doesn’t have the intensity of the previous one, but we are still expecting cloudy weather with scattered rain,” said Theophilou. “We may even have local storms.”
Temperatures yesterday didn’t exceed 14 degrees Celsius inland, 15 degrees in coastal areas and four degrees in mountain areas.
According to Theophilou, today and tomorrow will see scattered showers and cloud, the weather will remain unstable and there will be light snowfall in the mountains, combined with a general fall in temperatures.
The skies are expected to clear on Thursday, but the temperatures will remain low.
Meanwhile, two million cubic metres of water have gathered in the dams from December 23 until yesterday morning.
The technical supervisor of the Water Development Department, Phedros Roussis, yesterday told the CyBC that the most water had gathered at the Kouris and Asprokremmos dams. However, the capacity remains at very low levels.
It has reached four per cent, compared to 9.2 per cent, this time last year.
“The total flow from December 23 until today in the Kouri Dam was around 785,000 cubic metres and the Asprokremmos dam was around 625,000 [cubic metres],” said Roussis. “In total, all dams have received around two million cubic metres.”
He said one and a half million cubic metres had been absorbed during heavy rainfalls on December 23, while there was a dramatic reduction in flow in the ensuing days.
“Now we are hoping the new rains will increase the capacity,” Roussis added. “From the 8.7 million cubic metres the dams had on December 23, today we have 10.3 cubic metres from indications so far, because we are constantly receiving new reports on all the dams.”
