Archbishop: I have a right to express my opinion
ARCHBISHOP Chrysostomos has insisted he has every right to voice his opinions on the Cyprus problem.
His comments came as he visited his home village of Tala in Paphos on Sunday. While there, he commented on a recent incident, where a priest was prevented from completing a pilgrimage to Apostolos Andreas monastery in the occupied areas.
He added that President Demetris Christofias must take a firm stance on such actions and answered comments by the President that he wished the Archbishop would refrain from interfering in politics, saying Christofias had been elected by the people to solve the situation of a divided Cyprus.
He added that on occasion, he agreed with the President on this issue, but added that, “I have a right to my opinion.”
He stressed that the European Union must be made aware of instances where Greek Cypriots are not permitted to visit their churches and monasteries in the occupied areas and must realise, “it isn’t right”.
The Archbishop refrained from repeating a controversial warning that he would lead a march of religious leaders into the occupied areas if Turkish occupation forces continued to prevent Greek Cypriot pilgrimages to churches and monasteries in the north.
