Nikitas , as an intelligent man that you are can you please tell me why do you think the Israelis who puled out of Gaza some 3 years ago are now attacking Hamas , I'm certain that you will agree that , in spite off minimal damage caused by rocket attacks , Israel can not just sit back and take it. Hamas is asking for the annihilation of Israel ( So does GR ) What action would you think Israel should take ?
Can you also bear in mind that 100s of rockets are launched against Israel weekly , the fact that they are not very successful in causing the death of thousands is down to the crudeness of the weapons and not by the wishes of Hamas who would not hesitate to launch more destructive and accurate rockets if their availability became within their reach .

Just engaging in a bit of idle musing, but given that Israel has some of the most sophisticated military technology in the world, and the rockets being fired over from Gaza are pretty primitive, would it not be possible for Israel simply to shoot them out of sky or disable them in some other way? In other words, is the current sledgehammer approach really necessary?

Intense diplomatic efforts are under way to try to secure a ceasefire in Gaza as the Israeli assault against Hamas militants enters its 10th day.

Separate missions to the Middle East are being led by the French president, and a high-level team from the EU.

Israeli troops pushed deeper into Gaza overnight, with reports of about 40 Israeli tanks moving towards the southern town of Khan Younis.
Palestinians say two adults and five children were killed overnight.
They say more than 500 people have been killed so far.

Hamas officials say that 10 of its fighters have so far been killed in the ground offensive while the Israeli military reports one of its soldiers dead and 34 wounded.

Israel said it would allow more aid into Gaza later, with 80 trucks loaded with food and medicines.

The Palestinians said there had been clashes in the east, near the Israeli border. Earlier, Israeli forces took up positions in the north on either side of Gaza City.

The Israeli military said it had carried out 30 air strikes overnight. Targets included a mosque and the homes of Hamas leaders.

Meanwhile, French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be shuttling across the Middle East, taking in the Egyptian capital Cairo as well as Jerusalem, the Palestinian West Bank town of Ramallah and the Syrian capital Damascus.

In a separate development, a Hamas official said a delegation of the Islamist group would head for talks in Egypt.

Mr. Sarkozy's Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, is part of a separate EU delegation which has already been in Cairo.

TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTRY DESCRIBES ISRAELI ATTACKS ON GAZA AS UNACCEPTABLE

Turkey has condemned Israel over launching a ground operation in Gaza.
Turkish Foreign Ministry has described the launching of the operation despite warnings and reactions from the international community as unacceptable.

Issuing a statement, the ministry called for an immediate ceasefire before causing instability in the region and more loss of life.Turkish Foreign Ministry also made call for the United Nations to take necessary steps to take the situation in the area under control.
Yesterday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said that an international force should be deployed to Gaza Strip, and called on Israel to halt all military operations.

Delivering a speech at the Organization of the Islamic conference Executive Committee's expanded meeting of Foreign Ministers which gathered to discuss the Israeli aggression against the Gaza strip, Mr. Babacan noted that people of Gaza had no access to medical services or to foodstuff.

He also expressed the need for a joint action by Islamic countries and the international community to end the tragedy in Gaza.
