Would You Welcome Compensation ?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Would You Welcome Compensation ?

Postby bill cobbett » Sun Dec 28, 2008 1:52 am

GR tells us in another thread today about his/her ancestral lands in or near the Occupied Village of Tymbou. In the past Zan has mentioned his/her, some would say fictitious estate, somewhere in the Buffer Zone. We all know that DT or his/her family own much of the Occupied Village of Morphou and that Deniz has interests in or around the village of Anglisidhes in the Free Areas (I think). To this list I'll add my own land-holding of a few donums on the northern littoral a few miles east of Occupied Kyrenia, the old ancestral (one-up,one down, outside loo, no bath) in the old village nearby and Mrs Billc's horafi and the old house (quite a nice and large house and quite new actually) in her ancestral village in the Karpas.

I'm sure many, many here will have similar interests, by which of course I mean backed up by pre-74 kochans or a line of legal inheritance, on both sides of the green line. Indeed it wouldn't surprise me if the members of this Forum owned between us a very large proportion of the Island's freeholds.

Anyway, Pres X and Muhktar Talat have been discussing, or will shortly be discussing, the thorny property issue. A QUESTION, Would you accept compensation for your property, if it were offered?

As I raise the question I feel obliged to answer it first. Well put simply, it's a definite OXI from me. Nothing on this Earth will entice me to give up or to dilute in any way my very basic right to enjoy my property and to do what I like with it (subject to the usual planning/building regulations). It is not for politicians and well-meaning (!) international institutions to force people to accept compensation by negotiating away one of the most basic of human rights.

Being offered an official compensation implies that your land/property has become permanently inaccessible to you, and that can only come about as a result of some form of partition being imposed!

I must therefore decline any offer for “compensation” as I would NEVER allow myself to become an accomplice in the violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus. Not even for all the money in the world.

Private property is one thing, the territory of the country is another thing.

Citizens (and not citizens) can buy and sell land as they wish, as long as they do it according to the laws of the country. What nobody has the right to do is to sell off the country itself.

Yiannis can sell his plot to Mehmet, or to John or to Igor, but that plot will remain part of Republic of Cyprus. Our country is not for sale, and it will never be.

If TCs want to own land and live in specific parts of Cyprus, then they should buy land in those areas from their legal owners, if the legal owners want to sell and the money offered is right, and only as long as this sale is done in a legal way and not by blackmailing those people forcing them to sell their properties.
