GR tells us in another thread today about his/her ancestral lands in or near the Occupied Village of Tymbou. In the past Zan has mentioned his/her, some would say fictitious estate, somewhere in the Buffer Zone. We all know that DT or his/her family own much of the Occupied Village of Morphou and that Deniz has interests in or around the village of Anglisidhes in the Free Areas (I think). To this list I'll add my own land-holding of a few donums on the northern littoral a few miles east of Occupied Kyrenia, the old ancestral (one-up,one down, outside loo, no bath) in the old village nearby and Mrs Billc's horafi and the old house (quite a nice and large house and quite new actually) in her ancestral village in the Karpas.
I'm sure many, many here will have similar interests, by which of course I mean backed up by pre-74 kochans or a line of legal inheritance, on both sides of the green line. Indeed it wouldn't surprise me if the members of this Forum owned between us a very large proportion of the Island's freeholds.
Anyway, Pres X and Muhktar Talat have been discussing, or will shortly be discussing, the thorny property issue. A QUESTION, Would you accept compensation for your property, if it were offered?
As I raise the question I feel obliged to answer it first. Well put simply, it's a definite OXI from me. Nothing on this Earth will entice me to give up or to dilute in any way my very basic right to enjoy my property and to do what I like with it (subject to the usual planning/building regulations). It is not for politicians and well-meaning (!) international institutions to force people to accept compensation by negotiating away one of the most basic of human rights.
