As far as dating goes, the context of the ship-wreck in which it was found gives us the age. Standard practise in archeology - you don't have to resort to carbon dating every time.

A remarkable device that seems to appear out of nowhere with no pre-cursor. Something that wouldn't have looked out of place in the Enlightenment.

What also really excited me on the video was a possible connection with Syracuse and we all know who used to work there.

Hi Bill, yes, Archimedes was mentioned in the vid, but thought this device was constructed is a hundred years or so after his lifetime. But I guess there would have been a continuation of his work........

By chance, on the train home this evening I was glancing through a book I'd purchased for a relative's Christmas present, 'Greece - splendours of an ancient civilisation' by Furio Durando (Six quid in one of those 'giveaway' bookshops - this credit crunch has it's advantages - every book had a 70% discount - heaven for this Scotsman!). The book has stunning photographs of Magna Graecia, including Syracuse, Poseidonia, and Agrigento, the Valley of the Gods. The temples are magnificant, and definitely going on my list of 'places to visit before I die'.

He mentioned this early computer of the Greeks and had a picture of it ....

Maybe that's how the Choirokitians disappeared ... they were abducted by aliens who dropped one of their appliances as they sped off with early Cypriots, now colonising the Universe

I wonder why they left GR!'s relatives behind? :?

They failed the physical examination?

At only 5ft 2” they couldn’t reach the High Bars…

I think I measure up as a Choirokitian 8)

This thread is hilarious, but I must warn readers to refrain from any premature hysterical laughter until Paphitis has his say… only then will it be guaranteed!

Yes, we must refrain from frivolity. Back to archaeology and the profound impact such devices might have had on the lives of the Ancient Greeks. What I don't understand is that if they could design and engineer this....

Image

and these........

Image

then why didn't they also produce this......

Image

and these.......

Image

and then instead of poncing around looking like this.......

Image

they could have looked like this........?

Image

Still many questions to be answered...........
