UN special envoy warns 2009 last chance for peace in Cyprus

A special envoy of United Nations Secretary-General warned Turkey and Greece that 2009 would be the last chance to ensure peace in Cyprus, a press report said on Saturday. He said the UN would scrap its efforts to resolve the issue, while slammed the EU.

Alexander Downer had visited Ankara and Athens to inform the sides on the latest peace initiative in the Mediterranean island which has been divided since 1964.

Downer met with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ertugrul Apakan in Ankara.

"Everybody should know that this is the last chance. Either this problem would be solved or the island would be divided forever," Sabah daily quoted Downer as telling to the Turkish officials.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and his Greek Cypriot counterpart Demetris Christofias resumed talks in September after a four-year hiatus, marking the first major push for peace since the failure of the U.N. reunification plan in 2004.

Despite twelve face-to-face meetings, the two sides have made little tangible progress. Cyprus has been divided since 1964 when Turkish Cypriots were forced to withdraw into enclaves.

Downer confirmed progress made in the peace talks although it is limited, the report said. "But the talks are ongoing in a very slow pace. 2009 is the final period that we could cut a deal. I would work to strike a consensus until the fall with accelerating the process by March or April," the daily quoted him as saying.

UN TO STOP PEACE-SEEKING

The latest peace attempt had failed in 2004 when the Greek Cypriots rejected the UN-sponsored blueprint in a referendum despite the Turkish side's approval.

"The Annan plan was a big opportunity to resolve the Cyprus problem but it was missed. The European Union made a big strategic and tactical mistake. If they did not promise membership without a solution, then the Greeks wouldn't have rejected the plan. Some officials from the EU also admit this was a mistake in our talks," he was quoted as saying.

The report said the UN would not mediate if the leaders fail to reach an agreement by end-2009 and it would end its efforts to solve the problem.

The peace efforts would end in a deadlock if the two leaders fail to agree by fall of 2009, Downer added. "Because in 2010 presidential elections would be held in the Northern Cyprus and Talat could not be re-elected. The UN would be forced to start all over again however the UN is tired of the Cyprus problem," he said.

The Turkish Cypriots want equal rights in the administration after the unification and this is crucial for them, Downer added.

There would be no solution unless the Greeks accept to share the administration with the Turkish Cypriots, he warned.

The article you posted is junk from the Hurriet… (ALWAYS INCLUDE YOUR LINK)

http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/worl ... sp?gid=244

When it comes to the CyProb, never-ever read Turkish or Turkish Cypriot newspaper articles!

All statements supposedly made by Downer or some “UN report” in this article are bogus.

Downer would NEVER make a statement like… “The UN is tired of the Cyprus problem” or refer to the RoC as “the Greeks”.

Also, doing a search for the alleged statements should return just the one manufactured hit.

The entire article is not worth the paper it was written on.

That's it then, has this game now finally come to an end? Could it actually be true that, rather than the Greek Cypriots "RISKING" a failure of another UN Sponsored plan and then Default Recognition of the current TRNC encompassing 37% of the Territory of Cyprus, that GC Controlled-President Christofias will see the light and move to an "AGREED PARTITION" formula instead?

It appears that the Greek Cypriots are slowly realising that their so-called "EU Card" on Turkey, to recognise the GC Controlled ROC, means nothing more than another dream of Enosis! The EU are not that foolish, or dumb! Turkey is far too important for the EU, and the U.S (may I add) to just simply allow the GCs to sabotage.

The year 2009 is the last straw - FACT. Why? Because clearly, if it were NOT, Christofias would NEVER have bothered to engage in a full fledged UN Sponsored peace Process.

May I suggest you sit in front of your GC Controlled President, perhaps in a Dark room and ask the question of why he based his entire Presidential manefesto on "Seeking to gain Greek Cypriot Credibility with the International Community after Papadopoulos'"...let me finish,....."treacherous mocking of the UN Sponsored Annan 5 plan", and interrogate him properly before writing your answer to this post!

The New Plan 6 will NOT, obviously, be that different from the Annan 5 Plan - dare you say "OXI" this time! If you believe that the island will not be partitioned and Northern Cyprus will not be recognised after the future referendum, then be my guest.

The present Peace Talks between Christofias and Talat was our long-awaited dream, thank God Papadopoulos lost the elections and was replaced by Mr Softy.

Face it - There's NO TURNING back now, President MEHMET ALI TALAT has got his dream, has now positioned Christofias exactly where he wants him, AND has the INTERNATIONAL community, the EU, the U.S and the UNITED NATIONS behind him - Mashallah!

Maybe you can answer the question Halil… what makes newspapers like “Hurriet” manufacture such rubbish? :?

Does the Turkish Cypriot culture have the equivalent of “shame” and “embarrassment” or is it non-existent in your community? :?

Get Real,

Can't take the Truth eh-Mate!

The Pro-EOKA Nationalists will be ordering Chrostofias' head on a plate after what WILL happen next year - and the rest will be swimming in their own transparent fluid from disgust and shame of past mistakes and missed opportunities. The ball has started to roll Get Real, and the only way is down.

Accept it, it's either Dissolution of the ROC or a shallow swim for the Nationalist party!

Or Alternatively, you could agree to a Two State formula - the choice is yours my friend. We've had our hard times, it's time you guys felt pain where it hurts the most, your hearts! No more time-wasting.

Either way the TRNC flag will be flown high above the Girne mountains!
