Am I the only aviation nut in this forum? I knew I should have joined PPRUNE forum instead of CF.

Where is BigOz when you need him? :?

No one wants to comment on these beautiful helicopters? They are very graceful and high tech? :)

Oh well....If you don't want to speak about these lovely birds, then we could talk about Cyprus taking very serious steps to protect her FIR, which also covers the airspace over the "trnc", and offer adequate SAR capabilities, have adequate surveillance, and also protect vital Oil and Natural Gas exploration assets. :D

Paphitis, how can these be the state of art helicopters. There is no mention of CD player, remote central locking or even airbags. :)

Even though it does not mention it under Avionics, I would say that these lovely birds would be equipped with Very High Frequency Omni Directional Radio Range (VOR Navigation System) as standard. This is a primary navigational system which could be used to tune into any of the island's radio stations, since it covers the VHF band. 8)

This is a vital selling feature, especially when the pilots have to fly a vital life or death SAR sortie, whilst there is a vital life or death Cyprus First Division Football game. :D

It's not as if the pilots need to fly the damn thing. The 4 axis autopilot coupled with a secondary VOR and GPS, does a fine enough job whilst the pilots are busy following an important fixture. :D

I will get back to you about the central locking and airbags.

I forgot to mention that the pilots should disconnect the primary VOR from the autopilot, when tuning in to the radio station, otherwise they may find themselves arriving and hovering over the top of Sport FM. Now that would be rather embarrassing.

Turkey to purchase 32 strike helicopters from Russia
Turkish daily HurriyetDailyNews.com (22.12.08) reported the following:
Turkey plans to buy 32 Mi-28 strike helicopters from Russia after its request to buy Cobra and Super Cobra helicopters from the United States was turned down, Turkish and Russian media reports said on Monday.

Turkey will pay nearly $1 billion for the helicopters, the reports said.

The Turkish armed forces had planned to buy ten second-hand Cobras from the U.S. while waiting the production and adoption of the first T-129 helicopters, they added. The U.S. Department of State however declined the Turkish request citing the absence of available helicopters of this type, and offered as a substitute, AH-64 Apache helicopters from Boeing.

Media reports said command of the ground forces of Turkey had earlier rejected Mangusta helicopters offered by Italy as a provisional substitute, despite their being chosen for joint production. According to the command, A-129 helicopters of current configuration do not comply with the requirements of the ground forces of Turkey.

According to sources, the Turkish authorities finally negotiated with Rosoboronexport on the urgent purchase of 32 Mi-28 helicopters.

This must be the original source where Hurriet got their info from…

http://en.rian.ru/world/20081222/119092972.html

…interestingly similar models to…

http://www.patricksaviation.com/photos/elfot/8734/

But anyway, the ones Paphitis mentions are for search and rescue, etc.

So much hardware so little war... :?

I hate to sound like a warmonger but what's the point of piling up all this military hardware if it's not being used? :?
