How about the other Cypriots

Postby utu » Mon Dec 22, 2008 8:36 am

After reading so many entries by Greek and Turkish Cypriots (and the occasional foreigner), I was wondering: are there any Marionite Cypriots and/or Armenian Cypiots out there who frequent this forum? If so, what is your take on the Cyprus problem? After all, it is your country as well...

There are Armenian Cypriots on this forum, such as Kafenes. I met a Maronite for the first time recently. He lives in the occupied village of Kormakitis and called in at my regular coffee shop in the north of Nicosia. I am not aware of any Maronites who post here.

Pity. After all, Maronites are a recognized community with a vested interest in Cyprus. I would not be at all surprised that the Armenian Cypriots would not be looking at all fondly on the Turkish Cypriots, given the emnity between their two 'mother countries', but I've always been rather curious as to the Maronite perspective.

Prior to 1963, the Armenians were happy to live among Turkish Cypriots. We had many neighbours who were Armenian and we were in each others homes all the time. This may be because they could communicate with Turkish Cypriots easily as Turkish was their main language of communication. Whateever enmity they had with Turkey they were always friendly with us.

Ofcourse, 1963 changed everything when they were evicted from their homes and some were murdered.

I can't tell Armenians or Maronites apart from Hellenic Cypriots .... Their Greek is indistinguishable from GCs. No accent or dialect and no strange habits. :D

I knew a Maronite for a few years and just thought he was a regular GC until something cropped up.

Whereas TCs ... Lordy, lordy lord

I hope you are not surprised Oracle. Had you known any TCs who had lived among GCs all there lives, you would also been unable to tell the difference. Maybe only by their old fashion village attire.

Wrong sweetie. I can tell TCs apart from GCs .... if there is any confusion in looks (unlikely) then when they open their mouths, it's a dead give-away.

I don't object, there is room for all RoC-respecting types, but I will not deny what I know in practice. The easiest to distinguish are the London TCs (rough lot ... apart from you I am sure  ).

Oh, sweetie, I am talking pre-1963, before you were a mere twinkle in your fathers eye perhaps. Well nearly. You would not be able to tell my father and uncle apart from any GC.

Yes but dare I say it ... you are the exception which proves the rule! Kikapu too!

But I'll wager, if you spoke Greek to me, maybe even English, I could pick you out as mother-tongue of Turkish!

You are the ultimate Hellenised Turk ... the stuff of the future.

Scholarly, patient, temperate, loyal ... you have acquired the Hellenic memes if not a few stray genes

That goes same for my late father and uncles..
Having born/raised in a neighbourhood populated mainly with GC's in Limassol they could speak the lingo as good if not better than GC's..
