New had it last night as one of the leading stories. Terrible story needs to be dealt with.

Just because we have our rights trampled on by Turkey, doesn't give us the right to ignore things like this. Its an evil that all Western democracies are faced with, and with the growing number of immigrants coming into this EU state like all the other EU states, means we will need to be ruthless in suppressing it.

You can be as ruthless as you like, but racism can never be fully suppressed. No country in the world has ever been successful at completely stamping out racism. There are countries that have a good record and some others such as Turkey who have a deplorable record. Cyprus is probably at the good end of the spectrum.

I agree that racism can never be totally eradicated , all countries contain racist acts , the worst offenders those that are on the receiving end in the Western world , ie the Africans with their "tribalistic" prejudices , take a look at Rwanda as an example.
Racism is deplorable but it is sometimes confused with" culturism". I have to admit that I'm a "culturist " but I detest prejudicial behaviour based solely on colour or race . Cyprus has its share just as any other nation but the fact that other nations also experience racism doesn't excuse such ignorant behaviour in Cyprus. The profoundly despicable act of racism must be stumped upon by the Cypriot society at large unreservedly .

KISA reports two more racist attacks over weekend
By Marianna Pissa

RACISM and xenophobia are on the rise, Immigrant Support Group KISA warned yesterday, citing more incidents reported through the weekend.

According to Doros Polycarpou, leader of KISA, “On Friday at 10pm, a group of 15 youths stopped a man from Bangladesh riding his motorcycle with his girlfriend outside the Pallouriotissa church and demanded that the man gave them his motorcycle. When the man refused, the mob surrounded the couple and started beating them. The man then went to Omorfita Police Station to report the incident but was told by police to keep quiet as the attackers would deny the charges and blame it on him.

Police yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that the Omorfita Police Station had no knowledge of the incident.

“Later in the night, at around 12.30am, a group of 50 youths, believed to be the same mob only bigger, went to the old town, namely Onassagorou Street, armed with bats and started beating random foreigners in the street. A Cypriot young man who tried to interfere was beaten and ended up in hospital with severe fractures to his arm. The police came to the scene and sealed the area surrounding an Indian internet shop in the street, while 50 metres down, the mob continued their attacks and made their way into a house where some Nepalese students were staying and broke the doors and windows while they were asleep.”

According to a police report, “the police are investigating a case of assault and causing bodily harm that occurred at 12.20am in Nicosia. According to the data under investigation, a group of about 10 youths was attacked by some 20 persons who were armed with bats and swords. From the scuffle, two 16-year-olds and a 13-year-old were injured and transferred to Nicosia General Hospital. The 16 year-old was kept for treatment and the other two received first aid treatment and were released. Nicosia CID is investigating the case”.

Police yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that they were investigating the case and six Cypriots would be charged with assault and the foreigners involved would be questioned. The investigation is ongoing.

“The police did not find anyone and made no arrests. If the police continue to be unresponsive and apathetic I don’t know what more is to be expected,” Polycarpou said.

GR wrote

A teenager gets beaten up by a bunch of other teenagers at the end of a sporting event… something that happens often all over the world even with adults only this time the teenager happens to be black unlike her attackers. A great “racism” story…

Dr Andreas Demetriou, Minister of Education and Culture, said today

Yes, racism exists and it is quite serious. We need to confess this in order to tackle the problem

Bananiot says

This Minister should have asked GR first (perhaps Oracle and Paphitis without forgetting Piratis) before making such wild claims.

What are you implying by posting your sadistically stupid remarks again? Worried a day has gone by without you condemning someone with your distinctively discriminatory unfounded accusations?

Either join the debate appropriately as comments are made, or stop picking things out of context and erroneously, tarring everybody willy-nilly!

All it takes is a bad judgment by the referee to ignite a fight between the two sides and that’s why I can’t accept this incident as a purely racist one. It started right after the final whistle and that I believe, is key in this case…

Does it remind of an era when the same acts were commited against the TCs.

Placing a siddle on a donkey=GCs doesnt make it a race horse...the same old tricks would plague any union.
