Skeet Shooting.

Postby purdey » Fri Dec 19, 2008 9:39 pm

I have recently taken up Skeet shooting, and to be honest I am finding it very frustrating. I do shoot on a regular basis but am finding this discipline very difficult to master. Are there any Skeet shooters out there that can give me some intensive lessons for a week in March.

Purdey, the most difficult talent to acquire, (in my opinion) is the ability to react to that which you SEE and NOT that which you ANTICIPATE.

Once you have mastered that ability, the rest depends upon your own controlled reflexes.

Most important is that you should be completely comfortable with your weapon, a good marksman with a static target and the capability of being able to dismiss from your mind any negativity you may feel when you miss (timing or direction)

I do not think tuition can give you such attributes, dedication and perseverance can.

Have you tried Duck Shooting ?, a very good lead into the realms of Skeet.

Good Luck, hope I have given you something to think on over the Christmas.

I have shot skeet for many years in the past for the NSW gun club in Sydney. Even shot a few rounds with Michael Diamond (Olympic gold medalist). I could give you some pointers but I don't think I could give lessons as such. I haven't touched a gun for more then 6 years now. I used to see an add by an English guy who gave shooting lessons but can't remember now where it was. I think we should arrange a forum shoot one Sunday at the Santa Marina retreat at Parekilsha.

Thanks Floda, Kafenes. I have shot from 12 years of age, I shoot on a weekly basis all over Europe (in season), duck, goose, pheasant, partridge, pigeon and wild boar. I was coached in Olympic trap by Peter Roussos (ex USA olympic team) and he still gives me pointers to this day, and comments constantly on my chin flying around the stock.

Skeet is something I have always wanted to master but the dicipline is not huge in the UK. I have a Perazzi MX8 which is lovely balanced gun but it tends to need some encouragement for the barrels to drop on quick presentation. I will continue to practice and who knows it may click into place one day.

Purdey,

I have the exact same problem with trap shooting. Standing with the stock on the shoulder, calling pull and..... I freeze, I just cannot start moving. By comparison skeet is easy. It is a game of movement and timing.Treat it like a dance more than target work and it will make sense.

Skeet is an Olympic shooting sport. If you want more detail you can find it on Wikipedia or the pages of the ISSF.

It is also great fun and can be addictive, so beware!

Purdey, ever shot grouse? I grew up in the Scottish glens and in my teenage years used to earn a few quid as a beater on Saturdays every autumn after the 'Glorious 12th'. One of my favourite jobs ever, to be paid for hill walking, which is still a favourite pastime. Certainly had to be fit, particularly if one was at the foot of the hill for a circular drive. Also a beater for pheasant shooters, and even for snipe shooting - if I remember correctly they fly in a zigzag pattern making them difficult to hit.

My summer job the year I left school was on a farm which bred pheasants and partridges - the pheasants seem remarkably stupid, but I had more respect for partridges! Also helped the gamekeepers build holding pens in woods - used to be an amazing sight seeing the pheasants flying in to feed in response to the gamekeeper's calls and whistles.

A little off topic, but I am curious, do many people handgun hunt in Europe? A number of people hunt deer and feral hog with handguns here in the US.
