The £3.20 'invisible' knickers that have overtaken iPods and perfume as the must-have gift this Christmas
They might not look the most exciting stocking filler. But magic knickers are flying off the shelves; outselling traditional Christmas bestsellers such as iPods, handbags and even that perennial present fail-safe perfume.
Forget breaking the budget, a £3.20 pair of Invisible Knickers is, it seems, the must-have purchase for the festive season.
The knickers, which promise to banish forever the perils of VPL - visible panty line - have become so popular at department store Debenhams that they have been flying off the shelves as quickly as staff can fill them.
Sales of the knickers are up a massive 1800 per cent on this time last year, and have more than doubled in the last two weeks alone.
The knickers - which come in pale pink, nude, black, white and brown - are so popular that they are currently outselling every other style of lingerie by three to one.
Debenhams is restricted from saying just how many pairs of pants have flown out of its 150 stores since the party season began, but it's fair to say they are selling like hot cakes.
On Saturday the only items selling more quickly were Christmas crackers and Christmas cards, which is an awful lot of underwear.
It is, however, unclear just how many pairs of the seamless underwear will end up in the Christmas stocking, or under the tree.
Many customers will have been looking for the answer to the age-old problem of what to wear under that slinky new dress for the Christmas party.
Worn under a figure hugging dress, preferably without stockings (wouldn't want to spoil the line) Invisible Knickers are the key to eradicating any hint of the fashion faux pas that women dread, say the experts.
The best-selling knickers, which come in two different styles, are intended to fit like a second skin, allowing the dress to flow across the body without any interruptions.
Traditional cotton underwear is kept up by double hemming around the waist and leg, where the fabric is folded over a band of elastic.
But the Invisible Knickers range is made from a specially-constructed polyester with elastic quality, allowing women to wear even the tightest of outfits without showing a seam.
The fabric is cut with a laser to ensure the edges are sealed.
Debenham’s head of lingerie Annette Warburton said: 'Women all over Britain seem to have decided that this year will finally mark the end of the Visible Panty Line.
