Cyprus to Veto Turkey's Energy Chapter!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

"may hamper", "might block".

Do us a favour and do it and don't give in like last time when you tried to block the opening of the accession talks.

Time for you GCs and Greeks to prove what you are made of instead of just blowing hot air.

I only say that because I do not like to guess or pre-empt any political scenarios. I take nothing for granted.

Your reaction is quite interesting. It seems to suggest a deep inner fear.

What is even more important is the fact that no matter how many Chapters are opened and completed, they will only be closed with the RoC's endorsement or goodwill. It all depends on whether you open your Ports and Airports to Cypriot reistered ships and aircraft, and do not harrass or hinder legal commercial activity withing our EEZ.

Cyprus however seems to be very certain as to what action it is about to undertake:

According to the minister Cyprus - an EU member since 2004 - will veto the opening of negotiations on energy chapter scheduled to be inaugurated in December.

BABACAN BRIEFS EU AMBASSADORS ON CYPRUS AND TURKEY-EU RELATIONS

Turkish Foreign Minister and chief negotiator with the EU Ali Babacan has said that the timetable required to be set for the solution of the Cyprus problem should not be an open ended process.

Mr Babacan briefed EU Ambassadors on the Cyprus issue and Turkey – EU relations at a lunch in Ankara.

According to Anatolian News Agency, the Turkish Foreign Minister, touching upon the issue of setting a timetable for the solution of the Cyprus problem, said the talks should not be an open ended process.

Underlining the need for all parties in the Cyprus Problem, Ankara, Athens and the two sides on the island, to concentrate on a solution, Mr Babacan said it was possible to face disagreements on some points at the end of the negotiations process.

He also stated that Turkish side would not object to the UN Secretary General to fill in any gaps which might occur as a result of these disagreements.

"We support the full-fledged talks process on the island. We hope that the process would be finalized successfully. We attach great importance to efforts to find a lasting and sustainable solution under the United Nations parameters" he added.

He forgot to add "providing that the ROC caves in to all our terms"

The usual political gobble gobble double talk from Turkey but then what do you expect, it's nearly Christmas!

Cyprus may hamper Turkey's EU bid

Cyprus's Foreign Minister says his country might block more chapters of negotiations over Turkey's accession to the European Union.

"...as long as there are threats regarding the exercise of our sovereign right to exploit the natural resources within our Exclusive Economic Zone, in accordance with international law and in particular the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, it is very difficult for us to embark on discussions on the relevant Chapter of the negotiations," Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou was quoted by Turkish daily Hurriyet as saying on Monday.

According to the minister Cyprus - an EU member since 2004 - will veto the opening of negotiations on energy chapter scheduled to be inaugurated in December.

Turkey and Cyprus are at odds over Cyprus's oil exploration activities in the Mediterranean Sea with the island claiming that Turkey has harassed Cypriote research vessels in the exploration zone on four occasions since November.

Turkey however says the ships had violated its territorial waters.

Ankara has been negotiating several chapters on the country's accession to the EU but it has so far closed only one chapter successfully.

Ankara has been at loggerheads with Nicosia since Turkey's military invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Any bid to join the European Union should receive approval from all member stats.
