3 -4 you are on the borderline but still considered Cypriot , under 3 you are a foreigner !!!

1. Love of snails cooked any way, ( can be substituted with pickled cucumbers )
2. Halloumi , olives and tomatoes , cooked any way.
3. Souvla , any meat and cooked properly.
4. Watermelon eaten cold with halloumi 5. Zivania ( can be substituted with Cypriot coffee )
6. Ameletita on the BBQ drenched in olive oil and parsley.(can also be substituted with pickled cucumbers ) ps.testies to Floda !!
7. You have a least 10000000 koumbarous if you dont you call everyone a koumbaro or gardash !!

Forget the DNA nonsense folks the proof of the pudding is the above

Well, Milti, I have only scored 3 (see boldfonts) then this puts me in the borderline case.
Maybe, it is because I am half-cypriot (maternal side).
BTW, don't think you may have forgotten two things among the above:
1) Seafood of any kind. Fish, squid, shrimps, prawn, crab stick, octopus.
2) .....something that you and I share the most: W I N E...

Glad to see you are one of us Cem , always knew it mate !!
I left wine out so that my criteria , in view of my personal love of wine , would not be considered by some as .. biased !!
I think Freecyprus qualifies unquestionably with bollocks or no bollocks on his menu !! Not sure about our female scientist though !!!

Our criteria is based solely on meal/drinks orientation except for the item 7.
Therefore, a warm affiliation to you does not count !

Okey,I have the article in front of me,Kifeas.

A study carried out in 1990 examined the blood samples of 116 TCs,303GCs,235 Mainland Turks and 174 mainland Greeks. This was done in the USA by DrErol Baysal under the supervision of Professor Huisman (an American) and with contributions of English, turkish,Cypriot and Greek scientists.

The result showed that DNA genes of the TCS and GCs were not as close as expected to their respective "motherlands"Turkey and Greece, but belonged to the same Cypriot gene pool which was not similar to any gene pool in the region.
"This was normal and expected," said Dr Baysal," and could be explained by the fact that Cyprus was an island community".

This study was published in "the British Journal of Haematology" in 1992.
Dr Erol Baysal is a DNA expert with similar studies in many parts of the world including Europe,Asia,Middle East,Far East,North Africa, and the USA.

He was born in Nicosia in 1960,studied in England and America, and was once the head of DNA section of the biggest Thalasemmy centre in the USA.

Sorry Bir ... I have only just noticed this. :?

If you go over this thread, you will find that this is the study which we have been discussing, as having drawn conclusions beyond the data available.

It concentrated on ONE gene which was pre-selected because of its thalassaemia connection. That instantly nullifies Probability Statistics for comparisons anyway.

Also, there is no way one gene assigns anyone to one "race" or other. In fact DNA comparisons between thousands of genes could not do that, let alone ONE. Please see the other earlier posts on this thread which I have made on this, and if you are still not happy as to how "plastic" genes and their control are (yet still not changing one's assignment to the ONE Human race) depending on environmental challenges such as the presence or absence of malaria, dwelling-altitude etc .... then we can go over points individually, as I don't have time at the mo. for any in-depth postings.

Bir, think about this briefly as it might set you along the path to put genetics into perspective as to how likely it is, that we can constitute a multi-race species ...

One of my brothers has blue eyes, and the other brown. Their genes for eye colour are different. Does that mean they belong in different races?

Now that is exactly what has happened with this study. One gene, a slight mutation (environmentally selected), and somebody has exceeded their understanding of population genetics.

If you are not careful going down this road, Bir .... you may find that someone would stop that "Cypriot" "race" from breeding, because it is genetically inferior carrying such a mutation around ....

Poor Birkibrisli, I feel for you and I will stand by your side and fight the bigots till death. Not as Cypriots but as human beings.

Bananiot wrote:Oracle, do you anything on domestication of animals? Does it promote phenotypic evolution in any way?

Bananiot I don't think Evolution is teleological ... so "promoting" it does not make sense to me.

But yes we can force phenotypic characteristics by selective breeding, and now transgenic insertion of individual genes, and even cloning to select specimens for milk production or wool or etc.

But just a few generation of being left in the wild, and nature / environment selects for the default and these man-made transient phenotypes quickly disappear ... unless by chance they confer a selective advantage, but that would be dependant on the prevailing environment at the time.

It's the environment that has the final say, as to which genes survive. Even once a gene is "extinct" it doesn't mean it won't re-surface (if only by convergence), merely by the very fact that we have such a strong Earth-gene-pool. So let alone how similar we are to Chimps ... we are not even that different to PLANTS! :D

So, evolution does not have an ultimate aim ... what is the significance of this to our discussion?

Well so far, it is only you "Cypriots" that are intent on promoting bigotry such as constituting a separate Genetic "race" ...
