In many western countries you can't even get a job unless you're a member of the relevant industry union and pretty soon the same will happen in Cyprus.

Most Western Countries are moving towards Voluntary Unionism.

I haven't seen any evidence of that but I would welcome it as unions are mostly a nuisance to labour.

I can only speak about what I have experienced in Australia.

Compulsory Unionism is dead and buried here, and workers are free to negotiate their own deal. I can only assume that this trend will spread to other countries.

I couldn't be bothered proving this to you. Do you own search and you will see that the internet is littered with all the proof you want.

Don’t sweat too much over this... the last thing I'm interested in is Australian unions.

Not a problem.

Last thing Australia is interested in is Cyprus!

Our Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is too busy negotiating the next multi billion dollar trade deals with Turkey.

That is what happens when Foreign Diplomacy and Trade are interlinked.

I would have thought that the very sizeable Greek emigre community in Australia would be ensuring that the Cyprus problem is not being forgotten by Australia, just like the Cuban emigre community in Florida is not making the USA forget about Cuba...

Like you said... it's a Greek sizeable community and not a Cypriot one.

Greece holds Cyprus dearly, GR. If Australia did the unthinkable and recognized the north of Cyprus, you think that the Greek community living in Melbourne for example would not make their displeasure very plain? Part of my research in Turkish-Greek relations gave me information pertaining to some nasty run-ins between Turkish-Australians and Greek-Australians over the last few years. They are both very polarized politically, and have not been afraid to rather loudly and violently express their views at times. Cyprus is a hot-button issue and this applies to the Greek and Turkish communities all over the world.

Cyprus is simply an excuse for them, among many others, to put each other down in their centuries old feud.

If either of these countries had any respect for this island and her people they would’ve never caused all her problems. They are both nothing but a nuisance to Cyprus.

You might want to tell that to The Republic of Cyprus High Commissioner in Canberra, who seems to always fly the flag of Greece, as well as that of the EU, and Cyprus. :D

You might also want to tell all the Hellenic Lobbyists the same thing so that they can cease from meddling in Cypriot Affairs, or fighting for the Cypriot cause.
