A meat mallet , a barber and a poodle !!

Postby miltiades » Sun Dec 14, 2008 10:34 am

Arrived in Limassol Friday afternoon November 14th for a 3 day stay accompanied by my 69 year young brother and his son who both flew with me ,
to attend the Christening of my grandson , aptly named Yiannis , what else. !!

Flew with Easy jet for the first time and must confess that all went well , no delays
and arrived at Paphos dead on time. The flight was pleasant and gave me the opportunity to talk with my brother at length , its not often that we can be "captivatetely" sat next to each other for over 4 hours .
We talked about many things not least the anticipated good time we would have in Cyprus , he was staying for two weeks lucky sod . Irecounted my real life story of my previous visit the month before and how on asking an angler as to the whereabouts of Pambos the friendly fisherman I had befriended over the last few years ,and that the angler pointed to the sky and told me that Pambos was up there.Never got to give him the penknife I was bringing him as a gift .Rest in peace my dear friend. Following morning we arranged to meet at my apartment and visit the barber , we both wanted to look our best for the Christening after all . Off we trotted to the barber , I never forgot that Andy the barber had asked me to bring him a meat mallet the time before and true to my word and mallet in my hand we approached the barber shop. Alas the shop was closed , an elderly Cypriot with a magnificent white and perfectly trimmed beard was sitting at a table right outside the barber shop .
I had met him once or twice before and had made fuss of his gorgeous and well groomed little poodle who excitedly wagged her tail obviously pleased to see us . I knew he adored this little dog and was happy in the knowledge that Cypriots are much more animal lovers than people think .

After exchanging pleasantries I introduced my brother and asked where the barber was.
He looked me in the eye and casually pointed upwards , I felt my heart palpitating exuberantly , looked at my brother who had turned into a sickly yellow colour , his mouth wide open I thought his teeth would drop out any minute now , I dropped the meat mallet just missing the poodle by inches , and asked in a choking voice ,hands shaking when did this happen (Ma pote ?) Oh he replied " just a few minutes ago , he forgot his mobile and popped upstairs to collect it !!

And the moral of the story is that you have lost your power to bestow death upon those for whom you bear gifts ....

Welcome back cantankerous, soppy old fool

We had our haircut , a laugh or two , popped in next door to the butchers for some meat supplies , not forgetting the "ameletita " bollocks to you Adolf , and headed to my daughters house to prepare the magical , incomparable , illustrious meal commonly known as Souvla and uniquely correlated to all Cypriots young , old , men women dogs and cats .

I'm certain that neither I nor my brothers , are the only Cypriots who stand to attention whenever the word Souvla is uttered but we do honest , in fact my eccentric older brother starts singing the Cypriot national anthem at the very mention of the word souvla expecting us young siblings to join in ! It goes something like this : Eeen epses epia esso tis patin patin chesfiroun ....
My younger brother , a mere 60 , lives in Cyprus in fact , and out of respect to his two elder brothers he joins in at the chorus only !!

Cant wait to get back to the magical sweet sunny Cyprus the land of all true Cypriots , the land that its people should not be eager to hand over to foreign countries such as Turkey or Greece , a land that belongs not to the Greeks or the Turks but to the Cypriots .
More to come ? you bet !!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm souvla! It deserves the 'standing to attention' appreciation, but please Milti, no more snails! YUK! :(
