In the early '50s when Mrs BillC (Senior), my mother, left the Karpas and the old country for GB, I remember she told me it took a boat journey to Piraeus and from there another boat to Venice, Italy and then overland by train to the Channel, another ferry and then a train in to Victoria Railway Station, London.

Most likely is was the SS Messapia or SS Enotria, its sister ship. That was my first visit ti Pireaus. On the way to the UK we stopped at Pireaus and had Turkish coffee. On the way back the same lafenion did not have any. We had to have Greek coffee. (1958)

That's right Bill , most of us old timers left Cyprus on ship , firstly on a boat from Limassol that took us onto the ship anchored about half a mile away from port , with relatives gathered at the port side waving white handkerchiefs. My ship was called Phocea and sailed right through to Marseilles , unlike most other sea journeys that called in Piraeus and Brindisi . From there on was a journey by train to Paris and then on to another train that took us to Calais from where we got the ferry boat to Dover and the train from there to Victoria .The journey took a week ! Let me just , for the benefit of GR !!!! recount my first experience at Victoria station as a 15 year old green Cypriot boy . On second thoughts I thnk I may PM GR so that he can take his time and read it over and over again !!!

I surmised this morning, that Lee was referring to "Alexandra from X Factor" because my ears picked up as I heard her rendition on the radio, of my favourite song by Leonard Cohen (Hallelujah) ... and she had ruined it :(

She had better not put it on general release .....
