He selfishly got many family members and friends in trouble for nothing! If you’re going to escape prison in a small country like this you’d better have plans to leave the country too otherwise the whole thing is silly.

Police issue warrant for Al Capone accomplice
By Jean Christou

POLICE yesterday issued an arrest warrant for a Nicosia man they believe aided fugitive killer Antonis Prokopiou Kitas, who was still at large yesterday, despite the island’s biggest ever manhunt.

The wanted man was identified as Eleftherios (Lefteris) Demetriou, 27, from Yeri, the same Nicosia village from which another of Kitas’ alleged accomplices Rodosthenis Christodoulou hails.

Following a day and night of all-out searching for Kitas between Larnaca and Limassol between Friday morning and yesterday, police established that a phone call made from an apartment the fugitive was staying in, was made to Demetriou on Thursday night.

Demetriou is described as being 1.70 to 1.75 metres tall with short brown hair combed back. Police appealed to the public to come forward if they have any information on the suspect.

Meanwhile, the manhunt that began on Friday morning after two police officers on foot patrol spotted Kitas, alias Al Capone, leaving a holiday complex in the Ayios Theodoros area of Larnaca, was continuing yesterday and appeared slated to continue through a second night.

A police spokeswoman told the Sunday Mail that so far Kitas, 42, had not been found. “The investigation is continuing,” she said. “It will continue until he is found.”

Police have set up an operations centre at Zygi from which to co-ordinate efforts by several units, ranging from anti-riot squad MMAD to CID, plus air and sea units, the motorcycle squad and sniffer dogs.

The massive manhunt, which is believed to involve half the island’s police force, has included road blocks and house-to-house searches, stretching from Kiti to Zygi.

At the holiday complex, where it is believed Kitas stayed at least on Thursday night, a stash of food was found in one apartment that was taken away for examination. Forensics also took fast-food packaging for DNA testing.

A Chinese employee at the complex had also positively identified Kitas through police photos. It was initially thought that when he escaped from a Nicosia clinic on December 12, Kitas, from Athienou village, had fled to the north.

His escape from the Apollonion clinic, where he had been residing for six months, led to the resignation of Justice Minister Kypros Chrysostomides, and to an investigation ordered by the Presidential Palace.

Kitas was jailed for life in 1994 for the rape and murder of two foreign women. His escape has raised more questions than answers.

He was staying in a room with no bars on the windows, had been there for six months but appeared to have complete freedom of movement, and also a new passport. He reportedly had over €4 million in his bank account, and kept a Kalashnikov and bullets in his room.

An embarrassment for the authorities
ANTONIS Prokopiou Kitas’ escape was an acute embarrassment for the authorities, particularly the Justice Ministry under whose authority the Central Prisons and police force lie, prompting a wave of criticism from opposition DISY.

The debacle forced the resignation of Justice Minister Kypros Chrysostomides, something unheard of in Cyprus.

Prison director Michalis Hadjidemetriou was suspended pending an investigation into the escape, while Police Chief Iacovos Papacostas, who refused to comment on the issue in light of a criminal investigation, took convalescent leave.

Cynics assumed Papacostas, who faced a barrage of criticism for failing to step down, had taken time off to escape the pressure. Apparently, however, he had “major surgery” in Greece and only returned a few days ago to recuperate. His sick leave was cut short on Monday as he spearheaded the operation to bring Kitas in.

Meanwhile, the five criminal investigators appointed to examine the incident are no nearer to concluding their investigation. Two of the investigators were said to have sat in during Kitas’ five-hour interrogation on Monday. It is thought the 42-year-old’s arrest will shed light on a number of rumours that circulated during the three and a half weeks.

One of the unconfirmed stories that surfaced immediately after Kitas’ disappearance was that during his treatment for gastric reflux at the Appollonion hospital, he worked as a police informant. Other reports were that the 42-year-old had spent his time planning and even executing crimes during the early hours while his oblivious prison guards slept.

Suspicions of corruption within the police force have also prompted calls for further investigation by President Demetris Christofias and opposition DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades.

December 12: Kitas’ escapes from Nicosia’s Appollonion private hospital where he had been receiving treatment for gastric reflux for the past six months.

Police are accused of having prior knowledge of escape and botching Kita’s arrest on Stassicratous Street. Police shootout on Stassicratous Street leaves Kitas injured as he speeds off with three other people in a four-wheel drive.

December 15: Sightings of Kitas are called into police throughout the day. Authorities investigate reports that the 42-year-old had circa €4.5 million in his bank accounts, in spite of his 14 year incarceration. Central Prisons accused of lax security measures at the hospital.

December 17: Justice Minister Kypros Chrysostomides resigns. Cabinet appoints five criminal investigators to examine all events prior to, during and after the escape.

December 19: Health Ministry launches probe into why two separate Medical Council meetings reached two different conclusions regarding Kitas’ treatment.

December 22: New Justice Minister Loucas Louca sworn in.

December 29: Nicosia court sends 31-year-old Ioannis Menikou to direct trial. He was one of the men in the car with Kita on the night of his escape.

January 2: Two police officers on foot patrol spot Kitas leaving a holiday complex in the Ayios Theodoros area of Larnaca but the 42-year-old manages to give them the slip.

January 5: Kitas arrested at his cousin’s home in Paralimni.

He manages to to stay in hospital for 6 months supposidly suffering "gastric reflux".
He freely comes and goes as he wishes.
Plans and carries out robberies and other criminal acts.
Has 4.5million Euors in his bank account.
Has a Kalashnikov and ammo in his hospital room.
He ran rings around "police" and "politicians" and pobably had some of them on his payroll.
He manages to "escape" from hospital.
Manages to escape from the "police" twice.

And you call him dumb?
