Police issue warrant for Al Capone accomplice
By Jean Christou
POLICE yesterday issued an arrest warrant for a Nicosia man they believe aided fugitive killer Antonis Prokopiou Kitas, who was still at large yesterday, despite the island’s biggest ever manhunt.
The wanted man was identified as Eleftherios (Lefteris) Demetriou, 27, from Yeri, the same Nicosia village from which another of Kitas’ alleged accomplices Rodosthenis Christodoulou hails.
Following a day and night of all-out searching for Kitas between Larnaca and Limassol between Friday morning and yesterday, police established that a phone call made from an apartment the fugitive was staying in, was made to Demetriou on Thursday night.
Demetriou is described as being 1.70 to 1.75 metres tall with short brown hair combed back. Police appealed to the public to come forward if they have any information on the suspect.
Meanwhile, the manhunt that began on Friday morning after two police officers on foot patrol spotted Kitas, alias Al Capone, leaving a holiday complex in the Ayios Theodoros area of Larnaca, was continuing yesterday and appeared slated to continue through a second night.
A police spokeswoman told the Sunday Mail that so far Kitas, 42, had not been found. “The investigation is continuing,” she said. “It will continue until he is found.”
Police have set up an operations centre at Zygi from which to co-ordinate efforts by several units, ranging from anti-riot squad MMAD to CID, plus air and sea units, the motorcycle squad and sniffer dogs.
The massive manhunt, which is believed to involve half the island’s police force, has included road blocks and house-to-house searches, stretching from Kiti to Zygi.
At the holiday complex, where it is believed Kitas stayed at least on Thursday night, a stash of food was found in one apartment that was taken away for examination. Forensics also took fast-food packaging for DNA testing.
A Chinese employee at the complex had also positively identified Kitas through police photos. It was initially thought that when he escaped from a Nicosia clinic on December 12, Kitas, from Athienou village, had fled to the north.
His escape from the Apollonion clinic, where he had been residing for six months, led to the resignation of Justice Minister Kypros Chrysostomides, and to an investigation ordered by the Presidential Palace.
Kitas was jailed for life in 1994 for the rape and murder of two foreign women. His escape has raised more questions than answers.
He was staying in a room with no bars on the windows, had been there for six months but appeared to have complete freedom of movement, and also a new passport. He reportedly had over €4 million in his bank account, and kept a Kalashnikov and bullets in his room.
