FISHING WITH BIG AL

I'm not a fisherman at all, but enjoyed your "Fish Stories" BigAl. Maybe because there was a boat was mentioned that caught my interest.

My experience with fishing has been to trawl couple of fishing lines behind my sailboat and wait until the fish took a bite. We caught mostly Mahi Mahi (Dorado), Barracuda and Bonito (Tuna). When we didn't catch anything for the day, we had a large stock of canned sardines.!

Another forum member "Dinos" is also a keen fisherman.

kikapu,
Thats for the positive feedback. We also have Mahi Mahi in Oz, we call them dolphin fish or "dollies". I have some pictures of a 25kg mahi mahi i caught as well as a 40kg yellow fin tuna but the pic quality is crap as i have to scan photos.
Its great to hear there are other forum members that enjoy the best sport in the world...other that football ofcourse.

First and last time I went fishing was on a lake. I got the biggest migraine sitting and watching the float withy the sun rippling off the waves into my eyes. Sort of put me off for life. Your kind of sea fishing might make me change my mind though. Whats the best for eating out there Big Al?

Hi Zan,
Probably the best eating fish in the open water would be Mahi Mahi. Swordfish/Marlin are great to catch but contain high levels of Mercury and shouldnt really be eaten, plus they dont taste too good. Most types of Tuna are really nice too. When in Cyprus/Turkey/Greece though you cant go past the mighty barbun (red mullet), not a huge fish but taste wise this fish kicks arse.

Cheers mate. That is one of my favourite memories of being in Cyprus in 1974. Sitting in a sea front cafe in Yesil Irmak eating fresh fish straight out of the sea. I have been trying to reproduce that same taste ever since.

Yeah, they call it the Dolphin Fish also in the Caribbean, due to the shape of it's head. The only problem calling it a Dolphin Fish to average person is, they look at you with a smirk on their faces and with a condescending voice as if to say they know everything when they say to you, "Dolphins are Mammals and not a Fish" and then even with greater disgust on their face, they say,
"how can you eat Flipper".!

I have some "fish stories" that I can add to your thread later, BigAl.
