WE WANT EQUAL TREATMENT WITH GREEK CYPRIOTS`

The President gave a start to his Brussels agenda with a meeting with the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and the Enlargement Comissioner Olli Rehn.

In a press statement at the end of the meeting, President Talat said the Turkish Cypriot side has clearly asked for an equal treatment with Greek Cypriots- which is an essential Turkish Cypriot demand for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The Turkish Cpyriot side also wants to be listened, the President added.
Stressing that the reunificaion of Cyprus is in the interest of the |Europoean Union too, Mr Talat noted that the equal treatment of Turkish Cypriots will contribute to a solution.

Pointing out that the negotiations continue under the United Nations basis, he said he told Basrroso and Rehn that they are not asking for the EU’s mediation or political intervention.

`Barroso and Rehn have expressed their demand for an early political settlement in Cyprus. As Cyprus as a whole will become an EU member in case of a solution, they said they can provide any technical assisstance to both sides when needed` Talat said.
Stating that the EU also admits that the negotiations process is progressing slowly, Talat said `the EU officials tried to ensure us that they are encouraging both sides for a solution`.

Today the President continued his contacts with a breakfast with media representatives.

Mr. Talat later met with the EU Foreign Policy and Defence Chief Javier Solana.

He is also expected to come together with some EU foreign ministers separately.

President Talat will return to the island tomorrow.

So the agreement "favoured" the TCs but "did nothing to protect them"..hmmmm

Hmmm...I am just wondering how an agreement that favours one side does nothing to protect them. :?

And of course the Greeks and the Greek Cypriots being so generous and having a great wish to "protect" the Turkish Cypriots decided to give them the "protection" they deserved....with guns, bombs and a bullet through the head.

How kind!

illegal.

The most used and famous word in the Greek and Greek Cypriot propaganda together with "pseudo".

Cretin! You obviously have a problem understanding the logic of the argument.

It favoured one side - it gave the TCs disproportionate rights and power which resulted an absence of goodwill and animosity between the two sides in the infant State.
The end result was intercommunal fighting in which, unsurprisingly, the TCs, outnumbered 4 to 1, came off worst.

Ergo, it failed to protect them.

The debate as to who started the intercommunal fighting has been argued on this site many times. My belief is that the Greek/Turkish problem in Cyprus cannot be looked at in isolation, you have to look at the conflict between the two sides in other areas and in earllier times. here's one for you to chew on, http://www.ellopos.com/blog/?p=98

The word illegal applies to many aspects of Cypriot history, it is used and "famous" for the simple reason that it so many illegalities have been commited by outsiders on the islands inhabitants.

Pseudo is from Greek - hardly surprising it gets a lot of use! :)

Is this Talat man for real, or has he lost the plot completely?

He went to Brussels pretending to be a “president” of a (non-EU member) separate “state” in Cyprus, the “TRNC,” one that was (illegally) “established” on the soil of another (EU member) state, which he does not recognize –set aside its EU membership- and said to Barroso, the president of the EU Commission that: (a.) the TCs must have “equal treatment” and separate participation in the EU parliament by taking 2 out of the 6 seats allocated to the RoC, and (b.) that the Turkish Cypriots “do not want the mediation of the EU which had lost neutrality due to the memberships of the Greek Cypriot administration and Greece…”

Such a defective logic and such a ridiculous way of behaving, I have never seen in my life!

Either the man does not recognize the existence of the EU and /or Cyprus’s membership to it, due to the fact that he does not recognize the existence of the RoC (he only recognizes a “GC administration” in the south,) in which case the question is: on what platform and for what reason has he visited Brussels and met with Barroso in the first place; or he does indeed recognize both the EU and the RoC, as well as its (RoC) membership in it (EU,) in which case the question becomes: on what platform has he asked Barroso to grand to a separate (non EU member) “state,” the “TRNC,” two (2) out of the six (6) seats in the EU parliament that were allocated to another (EU member) state, the RoC.

Honestly, it is unbelievably absurd!

With the funds all but dried up he's under enormous pressure to hold the “TRNC” together so I expect to see a lot worse coming from his direction in the near future. Note…

"We want to encourage the Greek Cypriots to engage in a more serious process, that is the problem. They are not in a hurry."

Six months ago he was in no hurry either but funnily enough he suddenly is…
