Next stop, Greece!

Or is it back to Australia?

I never bothered to apply for aussie citizenship, despite being a permanent resident there for 15 years, on purpose so that I would never be able to return.

As for Greece, I’d sooner move to Bangladesh…

I’d consider Austria, Switzerland, or the British countryside.

What a load of bullshit! You have Aussie citizenship. There are 4,000 Australian citizens in Cyprus and you are one of them.

I bet you are even registered with the Aussie embassy for emergency evac through Akrotiri should anything happen.

Before you were criticising the Swiss Constitution and now you want to live there.

Just let me know when you arrive back to Australia. I will personally come and pick you up at the airport and transfer you to the garbage tip. 8)

:? I think everyone can now see why I don't ever want to return to Australia...

Personally, I don't think Australia would want you.

But it probably has no choice but to accept your entry since you hold a passport. How else did you educate yourself in Australia if you were not a citizen? University fees are quadruple for foreign students. For Australians it was free, but now some HECS fees have been introduced.

I repeat... I never bothered acquiring Australian citizenship so how can I possibly have an aussie passport???

The only right denied to me as a permanent resident was the right to vote for which I couldn't care less.

Start using your head.

Very unlikely story.

I doubt you statement very much.

In fact, if what you say is true, then you have to be a most stupid man.

Tertiary education stopped being free at around 1994 but by then I had already done two degrees for free! (except for text books and materials)

It was never free for foreigners. It was only free for Australian Citizens.

Plus I doubt very much that you would have sacrificed other social security benefits, including free health, by not becomming an Australian. You also stated that you worked in Australia for 15 years. Did you enjoy being taxed at the highest taxation tier. 50% of everything you would have earned would have been paid back in tax. AUSTRALIA THANKS YOU FOR YOUR KIND CONTRIBUTION. 8)

Like I said, if you did not become an Australian Citizen, then you are so stupid.

No, everything was also free for permanent residents. Trust me. We were only deprived of voting. Ask your parents who may recall and you'll verify it but keep in mind that I'm referring to the period 1987...2001 which I experienced.

OK, lets just say you are correct.

What about free health care, social security, and paying about half your pay packet in tax over so many years?

How could you be so stupid? :?

What? I told you I was getting everything including the green medicare card and paid normal income tax like everyone else. As for "social security" I got a few dollars in the form of child allowance as the kids came along but compared to what I was making as a systems engineer in a prestigious company it was peanuts.

Actually, I thought you meant London, as the Greeks in Greece do NOT like those Greek-Cypriots!

And,

Yes, GR, I am serious with regards to an amicable agreement, but you guys (GCs) must be both realistic and serious.

In saying that, I mean:
* You know that without Turkey as a FULL EU member state we will always be sensitive with regards to the issue of Minority/Majority.

* You know that any Federal style deal can only accepted by the Turkish Cypriots if it is in the form of Two-Inter States, at least.

* But, what is more relevant is the Referendum. It's truly a NO-WIN scenario GR. And even people luck you and I on this forum clearly not agreeing to even the most basic questions of the Cyprus conflict, can you imagine those Greek and Turkish Cypriots who live in Cyprus and have "Protected" sensitive issues; like land and etc.

the harsh reality of all this GR is that even if the leaders agree to some kind of compromise solution, let's say a mid-point on all of their concerns, it will be the people who will obviously say "No". Furthermore, what if both sides give a 51% "Yes" vote each? Will the plan be force on the 49% percent of the Greek and/or Turkish Cypriot others?

We both know that it only takes a Spark to fuel a fire with our people, especially at let's say Football matches and etc. Do you really believe that the Turkish and Greek Cypriots are ready to mix, if ever? You need to be honest here GR, as in my view, there are many people from both sides who would dive at the throat of the other if the island was forcefully mixed tomorrow!

So you sacrificed Australian citizenship for your kids as well. How stupid as they may even decide to study in Australia down the track.

You are definately a nutter.

Another thing, permanent residents are taxed at a higher rate. I will visit the ATO website and post the link.

Using the country up for benefits and then criticising it is very low, so have no more time for little worms like you.

The kids were both born there so they automatically acquired aussie citizenship. They can go and live there or study whenever they like.

As for income tax, the rules may have since changed. I guess something needed to be done to encourage permanent residents to apply for citizenship because there was no incentive before.

Ok... go for a big worm.

Bullshit, you were taxed at a very high rate so that Australia can afford to you other benefits such as health care. These laws have always been consistent, otherwise it would all be a free for all.

Generally, you are an Australian resident for tax purposes if you have:

always lived in Australia
moved to Australia and live here permanently
been in Australia continuously for six months or more and for most of the time you have been
in the one job and
living in the same place, or
been in Australia for more than half of the financial year, unless
your usual home is overseas, and
you do not intend to live in Australia.

I am scheduled to be in Cyprus early next year. We could meet up, and you could repeat that to my face.
