Come on! Don't twist this into a foreigners thing now...

Congratulations GR! you are morphing into Zan ....

This is how the riots were reported as starting, in the not-so-pro-Greek, British press ...

The Observer, Sunday 7th Dec. 2008 wrote:
Hundreds riot over asylum applications
Hundreds of migrants waiting to submit asylum applications rioted in downtown Athens on Saturday, setting fire to litter bins and attacking cars.

Protesters said the riot began when one man fell into a nearby canal after authorities told the crowd that no more applications could be submitted on Saturday. Only a small number of applications can be submitted each week.

It was not immediately clear how the man fell into the canal. Police said he was injured and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. They said they were investigating the incident.

Asylum-seekers began setting fire to litter bins and throwing them into the street. A smaller group threw rocks at passing cars, stopping some vehicles and banging on them with their hands. There were no reports of any passers-by being injured.

The riot lasted for about an hour and riot police who were on standby nearby did not intervene.

I could've sworn the riots were sparked by the fatal shooting of a Greek 15 year old... that's what all the TV networks are saying yet we have a few in here who want to reinvent the source!

The picture which is emerging, appears to be that the police were caught up trying to create order with these fire-starting illegal migrants/asylum seekers, and one of the bullets fired ricocheted off a wall/pavement and killed the Greek boy ... which fueled the students' protests whilst more illegal migrants looted etc. amidst the chaos ....

If those protests don't start tailing off soon, there may finally come a time when Greece may have to resort to force....

It's interesting to see the similarities which are being reproduced here, with the French riots ...

A vendetta between the police and the anarchists has been allowed to build up over the years in the Exarhia neighborhood. The vendetta might have lead up to the shooting, but it is irrelevant to the event. A trianed police officer cannot be excused for losing his cool.

The rest of the stuff about foreigners participating in the riots is also inaccurate. A LOT of the looting is done by foreigners who happen to live or loiter around the stricken area. The rioting which leads to the looting is done by Greeks.

As for the similarity between the events and the 1968 events in Paris, that is total nonsense. There are no specific political demands over which the Greek youth are rebelling as there were in France. As one Communist party MP stated, there are no specific grievances, no demands, no collective ideals or political motivation behind the riots. It is simply a mass expression of a phenomenon which is frequently seen in Athens, and specifically in the area where the victim was shot. It so happens that this time instead of a few dozen the participants are a few hundred.
