What science cannot do and the acceptance of religious beliefs CAN, is unite people (particularly the underprivileged) and set standards (tenets) which PRESUMABLY will enable them to live better lives with the added bonus (in many cases) of eternal life, providing the tenets are adhered to.

As to myself, the prospect of eternal life would not appeal since I have seen so much hatred and destruction in the time I have already spent, I am sure I will have had quite enough by the time I reach my dotage.

Sorry, must end now, called to the bar, will continue later.

If I had definite proof that there was No God (nor ANY divine deity) I would not reveal it since it would destroy the hopes of many millions (of many faiths) who have little else in their lives BUT their faiths.

If I had definite proof that there IS a God (or other divine deity) I would not reveal it since it would destroy the integrity of those who had genuinely believed PRIOR to such proof, it would also weaken the whole structure of ALL faiths since the necessity of belief in the unknown would no longer exist.

The battle twixt GOOD and EVIL rages (as has been the case for ages past) and is really the basis for all religious (or other) beliefs, unfortunately, it would appear that EVIL is becoming the more popular in today's world.

Out of deference to those who DO still cling to their faiths, I think that WE (who profess to know better) should not advertise our knowledge since it may ultimately transpire that WE are harbingers of the very EVIL that I am sure we would wish to see eliminated.

Unless we TRULY harbour HATRED for our fellow man.

Floda you have very little faith in Man's ability to thrive on the truth.

It is ignorance which keeps people in poverty.

You cannot choose the truths which you will allow to be spread and which truths should be withheld.

It was a shock to many that our closest living relatives are Chimps .... but knowing that will make it easier to convince people they should not eat them, as they may catch viruses which readily cross-over.

joker-san, I am sure you are aware that there is much hypocrisy in many of the religions (and among the religious teachers) of the world, your post seems to confirm the fact.

If you are (as I think you have indicated) a Buddhist, you will also be well equipped with the mental ability to accept the fact and guard against such hypocrisy affecting your own beliefs.

Nonetheless, there are people who, despite the hypocrisy (simply because they do not recognize it as such) rely on their faiths to guide them through their lives.

Such people should not be ridiculed, nor should they be particularly pitied for they, like you, are contented with their beliefs (however misguided) and it would be cruel to discourage them since in some cases they have little else BUT their faiths/beliefs to sustain them through difficult times.

I personally would NEVER condemn a person for practicing what they truly believe in, I WOULD and DO condemn hypocrisy (whenever possible) since it is of detriment to both those who practice it and those affected by it, unfortunately it thrives mostly in both Politics and Religion.

Science is very often quite contradictory (even opposed) to religious doctrines, I confess that I am often in agreement with much of what scientists have to say BUT, for all the knowledge science has, if it is compared to all that is as yet unknown, then that knowledge is but a drop in the ocean (IMHO).

I wish you well on your route to enlightenment, you will find that others will recognize your qualities and it is then that you must convey your message to them, you will meet with much ridicule AND criticism (by those of little understanding), your inner peace will ultimately impress and you will be envied, if not emulated.

Oracle, The little faith I have in man's ability to thrive on the TRUTH, stems from the fact that there is so little of it available these days.

My sympathies are with those who are LOCKED in ignorance and used as political tools for those who thrive on the LIES they spread.

In an ideal world, one would have little need for the comforts offered by those who advocate the embracing of religion (of whatever denomination) since the very fact that TRUTH would be the foundation of such a world, would surely indicate that ALL the objectives sought by adhering to the tenets of those religions, had been achieved.

My sympathies are ever with the disadvantaged millions of the world, whose only hope for a peaceful existence is constantly interrupted by the LIES and DECEPTIONS of those who mostly advocate the alternative.

YES "I" can accept scientific proofs and theories, the starving millions of many less fortunate than myself cannot, the majority do not even know what 'Science' is. IMHO.
