Talat warns Christofias to refrain from bothering withTurkey

Postby halil » Tue Dec 02, 2008 7:21 pm

Mehmet Ali Talat has said he notified the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias to refrain from bothering with Turkey because Turkey is in favour of a solution in Cyprus.

Mr Talat was speaking to reporters after his meeting with the Greek Cypriot Leader.

Referring to the content of today’s meeting , the President said he is strongly protesting Mr Chrisofias’s statements over relations with Turkey and warned him that he will start responding if he continues this attitude.

Mr Talat said Mr Christofias put forward Greek Cypriot Side’s view in a written document in response to his objection to his initiatives to change the parameters of the negotiations.

He also noted that he pointed out that the United States of Cyprus will be a new state and put forward his views concerning the reflection of the political equality to the decision and representation mechanisms.

Stating that they discussed the issue of federal public services, Mr Talat said there are many common views on the issue.

Responding to a question concerning the oil exploration in territorial waters of Cyprus, Mr Talat said these kinds of works would harm the positive atmosphere before the solution of the Cyprus problem adding that he asked the Greek Cypriot Side to stop carrying out these kinds of works.

Remarks by Special Representative of the Secretary-General Tayé-Brook Zerihoun following the 2 December meeting.

The leaders had a good meeting in a friendly atmosphere. They began with a one-hour tete-a-tete. Then they resumed their discussions on governance, focusing this time on the federal public service, on which they identified a number of convergences, helped by bridging proposals from both sides.

They have called on their representatives to meet and Mr. [George] Iacovou and Mr. [Ozdil] Nami will meet tomorrow afternoon to carry forward discussions on some aspects of governance which have been referred to them by the leaders. We expect further meetings of the representatives before the leaders meet again on the 16th of December, when they will take up the issue of external relations.

The special adviser of the Secretary-General, Mr. Alexander Downer, will arrive on the island on the 11th of December.

Question: When will [inaudible] the chapter on the property issue?

I think we’ll have a better idea about that after the next meeting

Question: When the chapter on governance is closed, will it be with progress?

Yes. I mean, they have made advances in the discussions they have not agreed on every issue, they have left some issues aside to be revisited, they have as I said asked their reps to take up some of these issues.

Christofias REPLIED TO TALAT’S OBJECTIONS OVER DECLARATION WITH RUSSIA

The Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias has evaluated his meeting with Mehmet Ali Talat.

He said during today’s meeting they discussed the issue of governance and focused mainly on federal public services.

Mr. Christofias also added that besides some different views they agreed on some issues they discussed so far.

The Greek Cypriot leader said before starting to negotiate today’s issue he presented a written reply to Mr. Talat’s objections over declaration with Russia.

Mr. Christofias said that in his reply he stressed the fact that a president’s duties could not be debated and added that it’s his right to continue efforts through developing relationships with most of the UN Security Council Permanent member countries.

He also added that in his reply to Mr. Talat he said he has the right over the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and the right to use its rights in its territorial waters.

CALLS ON EU COUNTRIES TO HELP LIFT ISOLATIONS ON TRNC

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has called on the European countries to make more efforts towards the lifting of the international isolations on the TRNC.

In his statement to the German Der Spiegel newspaper, Mr Soyer touched upon the negotiation process in Cyprus and said that the Turkish Cypriot Side’s objective was to reach a solution within next year.

‘Our objective was to take part at the European Parliament’s elections in 2009 as a united Cyprus, but everything is moving slowly. I am doubtful we will reach that objective. We are facing difficulties rather than progressing’ he added.

This is what Ferdi Soyer said to German magazine “Der Spiegel” during his interview, in one of their questions:

“We in the north are interested in a country made up of two states with equal rights, and are supporting a federal model similar to Germany's. but the Greeks in the south don't want to give Turks equal rights.”

Bingooooo!!!!!!!!!

Since Ferdi accepts a federal model similar to Germany, my dear friends, the Cyprus issue is being solved! Consider it a deal! We GCs also do accept a federal model similar to Germany, and we are ready to sign an agreement tomorrow!

MrH, where are you? The Cyprus problem is being solved! Wake up!

Rival Cypriot leaders try to bridge gap on federal governance

NICOSIA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders met again on Tuesday for reunification talks in a bid to bridge gap on governance in a future federal state.

This was the 11th meeting between Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat since they relaunched direct negotiations under U.N. auspices in September.

"The leaders had a good meeting in a friendly atmosphere," said Taye-Brook Zerihoun, U.N. secretary general's special representative in Cyprus.

"They resumed their discussions on governance, focusing this time on the federal public service, on which they identified a number of convergences, helped by bridging proposals from both sides," Zerihoun told reporter after Tuesday's meeting.

The two leaders have instructed their senior aides to meet later this week for detailed discussion on the issue of governance.

Christofias and Talat plan to meet again on Dec.16, when they will take up the issue of external relations, said the U.N. envoy.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when the Turkish military intervened and occupied north of the island following a coup by a group of Greek officers.

In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot authorities declared the establishment of the breakaway "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which is recognized only by Turkey.

After years of deadlock, Christofias and Talat, both considered pro-settlement leaders, have agreed in principle to reunify the island in a bi-zonal, bi-communal, federal structure.

The two sides have to work hard to find mutually acceptable solutions for many tough issues including power-sharing, property rearrangement and security guarantees.

These states with equal rights ... how do we know one is not purely Turkish and the other over-run with TCs ("formerly" RoC)?

... after all he accused us of not wanting to give the "TURKS equal rights" ... he did not say TCs?

Oracle, all states, in all federations, are equal to each other!

In Germany, there can be no discrimination among the residents of the states on the basis of ethnicity. They are all German citizens, and they can freely move, settle and exercise their political rights in and from within any of the states composing the German federation.

PS: Remember, we are talking about applying the German federal model in full, including the way East Germany united with West Germany, when the Berlin wall collapsed!
