Two arrested after insulting north Cyprus leader on Facebook

Postby DT. » Sun Nov 30, 2008 8:11 pm

BREAKING NEWS 30.NOV.08
Two Turkish –Cypriot men have been arrested and remanded in custody after insulting Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Ali Talat on a personal internet webpage.

According to our correspondent in north Cyprus, the two men made various “insulting remarks” about Talat on their Facebook page, which was spotted by the Turkish Cypriot security services.

After appearing before a judge yesterday, the court requested that the men, aged 19 and 21, remain in custody whilst investigations continue.

As the number of websites being blocked by Turkey’s courts and government rise, so do concerns about Internet censorship in the country and Ankara’s already troubled record on freedom of speech.

Internet providers, chat rooms, blogs, message boards and personal websites based in north Cyprus are actively monitored by the “police” and security services.

The Turkish Cypriot north is seen as a breakaway state, with only Turkey recognizing it - the Turkish telecom giant Turkcell, own most of the telephone and internet infrastructure in the north.

In recent weeks all computers in northern Cyprus have also been banned from using video site Youtube, in line with a Turkish court ban.

Few things upset me and I'm sure many others, more than state censorship or interference in matters of free speech and democratic criticism. It is outrageous that the illegal regime/police state that holds the Occupied North seems fit to take the actions described above.  :x :x

This affair and the banning of youtube in the Occupied Areas again make me think whether this sort of censorship will spill over in to the Free Areas post some kind of boxxxllaaacks Bipedal Bicycle Feck-Up.

May I be allowed to show solidarity with the arrested pair refered to above by saying that the spokesperson for the Illegal Settlers, the very unofficial muhktar Toilet, is a plonker of the biggest sort. :P

Regretfully I don't think I can say anything worse than that here :D :D :D :D

One sure way to give the facebook "insult" wide viewership was to arrest the two posters. Stupidity is unbeatable.

No one gives you right to swear or use bad languages about anybodies families Nikitas . U have rights to criticise politic views of Talat but not his family or personal rights . no one gives you rights to open a platform and insult the peoples . now 160 of the forum members are under the investigation too .

now new platform opened at Facebook to support the President talat in one day more than 500 members joined to support our president .

no their begging in the press from Talat to forgive them .http://www.kibrispostasi.com/index.php/ ... ame/KIBRIS

The fact is,facebook site was spotted by Cenk Mutluyakali (Chief editor of Yeniduzen newspaper)
Mutluyakali wrote an article condemning the incident on his daily column.Police acted and arrested the boys after the paper was published.

Halil, when you're in a country that arrests people that insult the leader you shouldn't feel better when 500 of your countrymen then profess their love for this leader.

I feel sorry for these guys. They are going to have to live their lives being hypocrites, like everybody else who is silenced by this menace to freedom ... or risk losing their lives.

Who brought these evil Turkish fascists to our country?
