Who is entitled to moan about Cyprus?

Postby CBBB » Sat Nov 29, 2008 7:43 am

In another thread I had a go about whinging Brit ex-pats and got a bit of a response from people saying that it was OK to moan.

I agree and do quite a bit of moaning about Cyprus myself, as do all Cypriots.

The main problem I have with the whingers is their superior attitude and the constant "Cyprus is in the EU now so things should be different".

If Cyprus became a sunny UK as the Cyprus Dying lot appear to want, I would be off.

I love Cyprus and the way things work here. Of course there are improvements that we would all like, but these things can't be changed over night, and if they did, we would probably moan even more!

on second thoughts, two facts: 1. over 60.000 people are here from the UK.
2. I in 3 people in the ROC is now not of Cypriot origin.

That means a hell of a lot of people here not locals.
Would you prefer that people only moan about their own countries?
I mean if you say to a person from the UK that its crap there, they will probably agree.
But CGs on this forum get very touchy about any comments considered adverse by them.
Have your studies shown that any of the thousands of non UK people here "whinge"' (have a point of view) ?

My short answer to the title of this thread is: anyone who has some experience of life here. Now, please do not misunderstand me, what I mean is that Cypriots or non-Cypriots are entitled to a point of view about Cyprus related issues and entitled to make their views known.

However, when adverse comments are made on CF about Cyprus by a non-Cypriot, too often the reaction of other posters is not to discuss the matter/put it into perspective/provide some rationale, but rather to say, 'yes, but in your (country of origin) this or that is wrong'. Inevitably, a slanging match ensues - 'your country is worse than my country' etc. Also, too often we see comments such as: 'if you do not like it here, go home to your own country' - which is a little naive.

No country is perfect and surely the idea of this Forum is discuss Cypriot life? And of course, few people want to post about what they like - what people dislike tends to excite them much more and provoke them to post.

If someone critisises some aspect of Cypriot life it does not mean they do not love Cyrus, living here or indeed, Cypriots, merely that they view the particular issue in question, adversely.

I cannot think of life anywhere else in the world other than in this wonderful country, but I have no rose tinted spectacles and never try to fool myself that things are pefect here.

Are you counting the illegals in that? They moan too? I don't have a problem when some people have some complaints but it seems to me some people like to moan about everything. I understand if a local moans constantly for his own country because he didn't choose to live here and he might not be able to get citizenship elsewhere even if he wanted to. But a foreigner doesn't need to be here so if he doesn't like it he can just leave! If he thinks that by moaning all the time he can improve Cyprus then why don't they go to moan in their country so they will make their country better??

I guess the Brits that end up in Cyprus are the types who moaned about the UK when they were at home, and were told ... "If you don't like it here why don't you go and live abroad!" ..

So here they are! :D ... a motley crew of moaners ...

thank you Lana for a concise and rational answer.
do people wonder how others perceive them, or is it 'its my country i dont have to like you'?
if the anti British attitude on this forum is as apparent throughout Cyprus (ROC) then maybe thats part of the root cause as to why Foreigners form enclaves and feel unwelcome ?
i once heard an Engishman say that he could now appreciate how the muslims felt living in England after he had been living here. And dont think this is a Cyprus problem alone - maybe thats why a lot of your fellow Cypriots formed the Enclave around "Greek Lanes". familiarity, language and even religion can be strong bonds in a different country.
