A passport to death, British passport holders in fear

Increasingly carrying a British passport when traveling outside of the EU is seen as "high risk" dual nationality Brits are dropping their British passports and using safer options

News Desk

The revelation that British Greek-Cypriot businessman Andreas Liveras was shot dead for carrying a British passport by terrorists in Mumbai has sent a worrying message to many dual-nationality businessmen and women who travel regularly, with many not using their British passports when they travel outside of the EU.

The London Daily News who contacted last night twenty dual nationality business-people all British based have all said that they will be using an "alternative passport" to the British one when traveling. Several Greek, Cypriot, Italian, Armenian, Lebanese and Spanish businesspeople said to the London Daily News that travel to the Gulf states, Indian sub-continent and Africa with a British passport would be "asking for trouble" and that a Greek or Cypriot passport would be "a safer passport" to use when travelling.

One businessman Michael Hadjipavlou a wine merchant who regularly travels to the Middle East and Asia said:

"I have been in the UK for forty years, originally I came here from Cyprus, but in the last four years since the war in Iraq I have not used my British passport, but instead I use my Cypriot passport. This way I do not attract attention, my Arab hosts have no problem with Cyprus and I can do business easier."

The Foreign Office has advised British citizens to not travel to these and advises against all travel to parts of:

* Afghanistan
* Algeria
* Angola
* Armenia
* Bangladesh
* Bolivia
* Chad
* Comoros
* Congo
* Congo (Democratic Republic)
* Ecuador
* Ethiopia
* Guinea
* India
* Indonesia
* Iraq
* Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories
* Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire)
* Kenya
* Kosovo
* Liberia
* Libya
* Mauritania
* Nicaragua
* Niger
* Nigeria
* Pakistan
* Russian Federation
* Rwanda
* Sudan
* Thailand
* Turkey
* Uganda
* Uzbekistan
* Yemen
* Zimbabwe

The London Daily News contacted the Cyprus High Commission in London which has reported a rise in applications for citizenship in the last two years since it became a member of the European Union.

Satchmo (What a Wonderful World) would turn in his grave. Its a sad day for humanity. These fanaticas should be wiped out and preventative measures taken to end this type of terrorism.

My condolences to the family of Andreas Liveras. Sad indeed.

Ridiculous statement. :roll:

The British are very safe in Cyprus. If they were not, they would not go to Cyprus and live.

CBBB is a British Kybreo and he has no problem. And just because we debate with British expats about various subjects does not mean we hate them. In fact, Cypriots are very warm and welcoming depending on your attitude.

You do have a way of trying to put words in my mouth. Certainly not. He has a high level of intelligence to get where he is in his profession.
I blame his 'level of comprehension/understanding' of the English Language.
