RACISM IS SAID TO BE A MAJOR CONCERN AT THE BI-COMMUNAL ENGLISH SCHOOL
Representatives from Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot political parties, who have been holding routine round-table meetings organized by the Slovakian Embassy, have visited the English School where Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot students study together.
Yesterday’s visit was part of a series of confidence-building measures decided by the parties.
Party representatives and the Slovakian Ambassador to Lefkosa Anna Turenicova held discussions with school officials, teachers and students; where racism and discrimination against Turkish Cypriot students came up as the major concerns at the school.
Turkish Cypriot students complained of their discrimination which was also confirmed by some Greek Cypriot students.
Words of a history teacher working at the school were very engrossing.
The teacher said he had received letters of threat from unknown persons which said the teacher was making propaganda, distorting the history and giving lessons which were against national values.
An instructor at school said some of the teachers did not support the multi-cultural and bi-communal school mission and provoked nationalism instead.
Speaking on the issue, the Slovakian Ambassador to Lefkosa Anna Turenicova stated that the situation at the English School is a reflection of what has been experienced in Cyprus.
`We hope peaceful calls help students maintain their education peacefully and future generations gain a new perspective. We hope to see Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot youths coexisting in peace and harmony` Turenicova said.
