PM SOYER BRIEFED FORMER GERMAN CHANCELLOR SCHROEDER ON THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has met the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Berlin.
The Premier briefed Mr Schroeder on the latest developments concerning the Cyprus issue.
Mr Soyer also thanked Mr. Schroeder for his positive attitude towards North Cyprus and support to a balanced solution in Cyprus that suits the European Union.
For his part, the former chancellor said he was pleased to learn that the talks between the two sides were going well.
`The two sides can bring different proposals on some issues but the Premier is optimistic for a solution and the North Cyprus government believes that important progress can be achieved by mid-next year` Mr Schroeder added.
`We have agreed to organize a big celebration in case of reunification and I will be invited as well` he said, noting that he would be joining the celebrations with great pleasure.
Mr Schroeder said that the economic crisis facing the world and its possible effects on North Cyprus were also discussed.
Responding to a reporter’s question on the Greek Cypriot Leader’s statements concerning a solution in Cyprus, Prime Minister Soyer criticised him for just referring to some points of the 23 May Agreement that serve his interests.
The Premier pointed out that the 23 May Agreement reached between the two leaders envisages the establishment of a partnership state that will have a common international identity, sovereignty, foreign policy and representation in the European Union and the United Nations.
`Christofias who does not have the courage to tell the realities to his own people – is now ignoring some points of the agreement and talking only about single identity and sovereignty. This proves that Christofias does not take the issue seriously`, he said.
The Premier called on the Greek Cypriot Leader to adhere to the 23 May Agreement.
