SYMPOSIUM ON ASSESSMENT OF UNDERGROUND RESOURCES AND GROUND SCIENCE KICKS OFF
The first Symposium on the Assessment of Underground Resources and Ground Science in North Cyprus kicked off in Girne(Kyreania) today.
Major issues to be taken up during the symposium, being first of its kind in the Republic, will be the problem of water shortage, assessment of underground resources and the petrol capacity of the Mediterranean region.
The symposium which will continue until 21st November has been organized by the Cyprus Turkish Chambers of Architects and Engineers, Engineers’ Chamber of Mines, Metallurgy and Geology, Turkish Chambers Union of Architects and Engineers, Chamber of Geology Engineers, Chamber of Mine Engineers and the TRNC Department of Geology and Mines.
Firstly speaking at the opening of the occupational symposium, the Head of the Executive Board of the Cyprus Turkish Chambers of Architects and Engineers- Ahmet Omer Cagnan said discussions on the issues of water, stone quarries and petrol will lead to significant initiatives for the future.
Speaking next, the President of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Mine, Metallurgy and Geology Engineers- Ayse Ozhur pointed out that aquifers- the most important water sources in the country- are under chemical and microbiological threat.
Underlining the need for accelerating the search for new resources, Ozhur expressed the hope that the outcomes of the Symposium will help the solution of problems faced in the field of underground resources.
Another speech was delivered by Mehmet Torun- the President of the Turkish Chamber of Mine Engineers attached to the Turkish Chambers Union of Architects and Engineers- who expressed his willingness for the TRNC to join Turkey and the rest of the world in the celebration of 4th December- World Miners’ Day.
Speaking on his turn, the Head of the TRNC Department of Geology and Mines Mustafa Alkaravli said the issues of water, stone quarries and the CMC have been part of the Turkish Cypriot daily life.
Stressing that the TRNC has been highly affected by global warming due to its geographical position, Mr Alkaravli warned that water underground resources are decreasing.
For his part, the Undersecretary from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Durali Elal pointed to the fact that water resources in the TRNC are getting salted and contaminated further and underlined the need for searching alternative ways of water resources in the country.
The Symposium then continued with three separate sessions on mine and petrol capacity, and environmental pollution caused by stone quarries today.
METEOROLOGY DEPARTMENT CALLS ON PEOPLE TO SAVE WATER
The Meteorology Department has called on the people to save water as the winter is not expected to bring enough rain to the island.
In a statement, the Director of the Meteorology Department Fehmi Oktay said the country is expected to receive lower rainfall than the average during the winter months.
`The rainfall in September and October was higher than the season average but soil moisture was low as the rains came after draught.
East Mesaoria received heavy rainfall in November but the Güzelyurt aquifer didn’t because of low rainfall in west Mesaoria` Mr Oktay explained.
He noted that each drop of water that is saved is a giant contribution to our water supply.
Some local showers forecast for the last month of the autumn but the TRNC is expected to receive less rainfall than the average.
The temperatures are expected to be 1 to 2 degrees Celsius higher than the season average in November and December while the temperatures are expected to be few degrees lower than the average.
