Oh wow Svetlana - your ethnic prejudice knows no bounds.
'In the case of the 'Brits', they have (through their own folly) spoiled their own country and sought refuge elsewhere, unfortunately they have the habit of dragging their offensive attitudes along with them and it erodes the cultural fabric of their chosen place of refuge'
if you understood anything about British history you would know that the ordinary British people have had very little chance of influencing anything in their own country - the British ruling class (and they still exist) have always manipulated and ruthlessly ruled the population. Joining the EU was the best thing that ever happened to Britain- the British government has already been confronted about having only one way a citizen can challenge it - and that way is the House of Lords ( I rest my case - whose interest do you think thye have at heart?)
You seen to have an elitist attitude that does not become you at all. 'Erodes the culteral fabric'??? It seems to me that the local population needed no help here or they would have opted for a mainly rural existance with the mode of transport being a donkey - as it is, they have traded their land, metaphorically, for a new BMW and the latest flat scren TV. Their choice.
I am British. I do not have an offensive attitude and unlike you, I take people, whatever nationality, as I find them.
I would also point out that London is often referred to as the real Cypriot capital as it contains roughly 300,000 Greek and Turkish Cypriots, who, even before EI accession, were endowed with full British citzen rights- i.e. able to vote, earn a living and entitled to full benifit rights. If my government cared about me, maybe they would have negotiated equal rights for those British citizens who objected to living in a country with no constitution and no effective way for them to challenge their ruling government.
I am not a moaner and therefore do not fit your narrow and stereotypical view of 'Brits' - however, I reserve the right to protest issues I may have a moral objection to as a free individual.
I live in Cyprus, I pay taxes, social fund and all the bills that a local incurs - does that make me a guest? I think not. I am European and I left the UK because if I had stayed I would have probably become a terrorist!
Cyprus as a presidential democracy with a seemingly accountable government had appeal.
As to 'stolen property', I, as a lowly foreigner, agree, and that is why I have never set foot in the North, let alone ever considered buying a property. Despite the historic attempt at ethnic cleansing by some political Greek Cypriot forces, I still hold that occupation by Turkish forces is morally indefensible - however, take heart Svetlana, most of those foreigners buying properties over there will live to regret it - ironically, as will those who bought this side I think.
In conclusion, remember, not all Brits are alike - just as I do not believe
that the gun-toting, Ghadaffi clad Cypriot hunter with tiny dead birds strapped to his waist is an example of a typical Cypriot.
Allport defined ethnic prejudice as 'an antipathy based upon a faulty and inflexible generalisiation'- Svetlana - J'accuse.
